Transferring files between Laptop and Desktop

I currently transfer files using CDR between laptop and desktop. There must be an easier way.

Is there another way like LAN cable I could use for large data transfer? How would I have to configure the computers?

all you have to do is MAP drive, using the IP address from A comp to B comp on B computer change the last # to 1 # higher than the IP address that A computer has, and simply cut and paste the file you want, also using a crossover cable, if they are the same brand comps all you need is a straight cable.... let me know if this works, any other questions? My desktop has internet through the LAN card. My laptop doesnt have anything setup on network, it has inbuilt LAN though.

What about USB to USB connection, is this possible?

You can buy a cheap hub for $10-20 and set up a LAN pretty easily. I don't know of a way to connect them directly with through the network connection, but it may be possible.

If you are using a recent version of windows, you can use the briefcase function to classify certain files/folders as shared and use windows to update them as needed.

I'll try to keep this as simple as possible.

If you have a cable modem (most users)

Go and buy a Linksys WRT54G wireless router.

Make sure both computers have a nic card either wired or wireless. And installed of course.

Make sure you properly secure your wireless router, search google.

Setup folder sharing on both/either laptop or desktop make sure you don't share c:\

Goto My Network Places... You should see all computers that share folder's come up ... Then Drag 'n' Drop

EDIT: A cheap hub or crossover cable would work as stated above, but if you have a laptop you will enjoy wireless lan. Trust me.

you will disconnect it fromt he LAN , or you can hook you lap top up to the LAN and map the drive that way.... and just pull it from A comp to B comp.

Using a xover cable is OLD school..

You can cofigure windows to share files ...

I am sure the laptop and the PC are using the same Internet access...

if both machines use the same intenet access.. meaning the internet access at your home.. then you can set up a windows network.. and share your files. Of course you will need to make sure Both machines access the internet at the same time... either through a wired or wirless router.

yes this is true, using windows you can make a SHARE FOLDER and place whatever it is you want in there, such as copy and paste your whole C drive if needed , providing you have enough space and hardware to support it.....
