from the snopes article about the RSPCA-

They are not in the PETA mode but I find them far from fantastic (and working in cat rescue I've had plenty of experience of them over the years). They'll bend over backwards to help dogs and horses, but have a poor record regarding cats. Their main interest is in self-publicity. They will spend thousands of pounds trying to rehabilitate a walking skeleton (whose internal organs have probably given up) so they can get "before and after" shots for publicity and prosecution, but at the same time they'll destroy dozens of healthy homeable animals whose cases wouldn't tug at the heart strings in the same way. Why spend so much donated money when an animal has already suffered enough? That to me is cruelty.

In one case (in which I was involved) they refused to help a stranded cat unless a press photographer could be arranged. In another they "accidentally" destroyed a pet cat belonging to my colleague because they mistook the elderly cat for a stray. My colleague took a long time to get over that as the cat had been part of the family all its life. There have been othr cases reported in the press where they have "accidentally" destroyed pet cats at the location where the cat was found - in one instance they claimed the cat was feral - wouldn't you be frantic with fear if a stranger had grabbed you and was trying to stick a needle in you? I've adopted wonderful cats that the RSPCA have claimed to be too old or ugly for adoption, but the vet had refused to destroy the cats and contacted Cats Protection instead.

I will *never* give my money to the RSPCA. IMO they are a publicity-seeking organisation whose actual commitment to animals needs a darn good shake up (many volunteers do a great job, but the organisation itself is the problem). Their preoccupation with dogs and horses really annoys me. There are many smaller charities who get less publicity and these are the ones that get my donations.
