What do you send to someone in Afghanistan??

One of my friends is in the Dutch army and he has been send to Afghanistan for a few months. It's time to send another care package and he has been telling me that they are so bored there when they have a day off. I have no idea what to send him next to magazines, porn and dvd's. So I figured since most of you are guys you might be able to give me an idea of what to send him.

SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60. Let me repeat... A 120 x 60 button and no more that 3 lines of DEFAULT SIZE AND COLOR text.

When I was in the military is missed:

                    - music that reminds me where I´m from (music I like when I was home)

                    - cigaretts (they can buy it)

                    - something to do... cards, gameboy,pc,some games....

                    - pictures off whats going on at home.... friends, gf,family and so on.

If you send this I guarantee that he is happy when he comes home =)

                    Good Luck!

                        Some possibilities:

Good coffee, either ground, or coffee beans with a grinder, and maybe a small brewing pot. I'm sure they have coffee...I doubt that it is *good* coffee. :-)

Depending on your budget, an MP3 player preloaded with a ton of music. (If you don't have a ton of MP3s, see your closest teenager, they'll hook you up). Or a gameboy with some games.

They must already have soccer (foot?) balls, but maybe a frisbee. Or a boo******. Or a Nerf (soft foam) indoor basketball setup (hoop & foam ball), if they don't hang out outside much.

Some flavorful food additions...not sure what would be culturally appropriate, but like some good pickles, relishes, hot peppers, salsa, chutney, or whatever.

Think "non-electric." My time in Nam proved that things that need batteries lack a source of continued power sources.

Think "basic." Things that you and I take for granted, they think of as "gold." Also, it must be small enough to "carry" since one may not be "rear eschlon." A 1 pound device may not seem like much.....unless you're also humping a 80-90 pound pack!

Also, little cheapie trinkets that one can hand out to the locals to "make friends." These come in real handy when you need to establish a "contact."

A local newspaper once in a while is GREAT!

And, as a last resort, why not just write him and ask him what his basic, on-location needs are.

Finally, the absolute best thing to do is, once a month, send a box of home-made cookies. You have absolutely no idea how utterly wonderful it is to receive a box filled with crumbly cookies from home. I shit you NOT!

Honestly he'll want something he can use that won't get ruined by rain or sand. War isn't fucking Baseball... it doesnt get postponed for rain delays... so if it's something that can get destroyed send it in a sealable case... the only thing I kept on me was 4 pics of my family and friends and it lasted 9 months in the field because I had put the photos in a ziplock bag.

Playing cards, cigarettes and pens and paper they should already have plenty of. Dice are usually illegal, but something like that candy you let me try ... send him some of that

I guess I'd reconsider my suggestions depending on what your friend is doing there. I had a friend there who oversaw vehicle repair on a base, and rarely left there. Water, electricity, and other basic needs were met. If your friend is doing combat patrols, or is out in the field for long durations, he'll have more basic needs, like Rinaldo said. One of the requests from troops in Iraq early in the invasion was womens sanitary pads, which soldiers put in their helmets to absorb sweat.

Wow guys, thanks for the tips. I would love to send him a realdoll but they check the stuff you send them, and me bringing a 80 pound box to the base will make them check that for sure He has it pretty good there, they even have internet and stuff like that. They are there to make sure the area where they are building ect are save, and to make sure those people can have an election ect. I talk to him almost every week (when he has his 20 minutes online time). I just wanted to suprise him with something instead of asking him everything. I know he wanted some pics from the people back home and porn. But the mp3 player idea is very good, and I'll ask my mum to make him some cookies since I am crap at that. And a load of candy, because I don't think they have that there.
