I've actually seen this before on an install I did on someone else's PC. Don't remember how I fixed it. Let me think about it for a few and I'll post if it comes back to me.

                Good luck.

                  I'd try the following:

                  1. Copy out your bookmark files to another location:

                  C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles\XXXXXXXX.default

                  bookmarks.html
                  bookmarks.bak

                  2. Uninstall all copies of FF through add and remove programs.
                  3. Delete the Mozilla folder located at

                  C:\Documents and Settings\{username}\Application Data\

                  4. Reinstall FF and try to start it.
                  5. If it starts close FF and copy your bookmark files back.

                      http://mozbackup.jasnapaka.com/

MozBackup is a simple utility for creating backups of Mozilla Firefox, Mozilla Thunderbird, Mozilla Suite and Netscape profiles. It allows you to backup and restore bookmarks, mail, contacts, history, extensions, cache etc.

It clearly states not to install the 1.5 Beta over the 1.0 version.
