They knew, and did not care, because he was most likely the best person for the job at the time. All he had to do, was stay straight and not mess with kids, and could have fixed his life. But...

They should care, the dude is sick and should not be allowed to hold a position like that, but then again how safe would you feel if he was the janitor at your child's school?
