It's all about power to weight
I believe the new US spec model makes 190hp and still weighs under 2000 lbs... There are not a lot of cars on the market that weigh that little nowadays, even the newer Miatas weigh closer to 2500 lbs. Think about it this way, at close to 200hp and 2000lbs, a larger sedan, like your average 3 series at 3400lbs, would need 340hp to match it in acceleration.
Then add in the fact that a lighter car will always turn and brake better than a heavier car with the same equipment, and you start to get the idea...
Personally I've always been in love with the older model... 118hp and 1600lbs...
