Fag... Is fag an offensive term

All right i understand that fag in its basic use is pretty derogatory.

But im very curious what people think about it ( i mean gay people). I mean, i think nothing to laugh and call one of my friends a fag for being compulsive about his hair or something. And this is something many of us do from a young age.

I spoke on the phone with someone from the business tonight and his thoughts were that the term "fag" was probably frowned upon by gay surfers.

Is the word Fag a hurtful word towards gay men? I only personally know 3 and the answer from them was "fuck off..thats stupid"

Any thoughts? If not carry on with political banter and milkshake videos.

I think the name "fag" was a bad thing twenty years ago. Then again, twenty years ago we considiered anyone who was gay to be "bad". Not so any more. It's pretty much mainstream now.

Fag is a word.

And no matter how hard you try, words will always please some and offend others.

That being said, I have seen posters advertising "Fag night" at a local gay club. I hardly see why one of the most popular night clubs in the gay community would use such word if it was offensive.

I say go ahead and try it out. Some people will get pissed off but that will happen no matter what you do and you can't please everyone. If it gets to be too much, you'll know.

My presumption is that it's offensive to most homosexuals. I recently was going to bid on a nice expiring domain with "fag" in it, but basically decided that if I was going to use it to market to the gay niche that I would be turning many of them off rather than on.

as for daily life, its sort of like ni**er and blacks. theyll call each other that all day long, but as soon as a white guy says it, he's dead meat.

thats about the only way i can explain it simply.

99% of the time when someone says fag, they are saying in a derrogatory way. like you said, joking about something a friend did that you think is stupid. thats basically calling gay people stupid, because youre saying he's a fag for being so stupid. silly, but u get my point?

i also think history has a lot to do with it. if people had used the word fag 30 years ago in an affectionate way, not in a derrogatory way, it would have a different meaning today.

I would not use the word "Fag" to market to gay surfers especially if you are straight. I guess a good rule of thumb is if you are not sure a word is offensive dont use it.....

I do not know many blacks that call each other n*gger, usually if they do it is making fun of white people or to get a laugh. I believe the word you are looking for is nigga. But you are on the right track, it is the origin and tonation of the word usage not the word itself so much it seems

Interesting replies. I wasnt so curious about using it for marketing (allthough i was curious) but more interested in some of the gay webmasters input on whether or not it is concidered offensive ar just another word by there gay surfers.

Not on a marketing level but on a personal level. (yes i know it boils down to the same shit)

I find it pretty offensive when it's used by people who are not embrassing it as a term that's been used against them. For gay and transgendered people, I'm ok with it. It's all about history and empowerment, though.

People who don't understand it in a personal way, shouldn't be using it.
