But can he play the uke (aka ukulele) like a demon?

And when he pees,
He attracts fleas...

Some of the fastest guitarists have not been the best at creating beautiful melodies. It is one thing to be fast, and quite another to create beautiful music, which often involves much more than sheer speed.
One of the legends of guitar, Eric Clapton, refers to himself as "Slow Hand". Other guitar masters such as Carlos Santana and Jeff Beck understand how to pause for feeling, and are gifted at accents and understatement.
Judging and rating guitarists really is subjective. For example my favorite guitarist, because of his inventiveness and expressiveness, is Jimi Hendrix, however Jimi was unorthodox in every way. He played left-handed, and strung his guitar upside down.
I am such a fanatic that I own the same guitar that he often played:

He was born in the summer of his 27th year
Comin? home to a place he?d never been before
He left yesterday behind him, you might say he was born again
You might say he found a key for every door
When he first came to the mountains his life was far away
On the road and hangin? by a song
But the string?s already broken and he doesn?t really care
It keeps changin? fast and it don?t last for long
But the colorado rocky mountain high
I?ve seen it rainin? fire in the sky
The shadow from the starlight is softer than a lullabye
Rocky mountain high (high colorado) rocky mountain high (high colorado)
He climbed cathedral mountains, he saw silver clouds below
He saw everything as far as you can see
And they say he got crazy once, and he tried to touch the sun
And he lost a friend but kept his memory
Now he walks in quiet solitude the forests and the streams
Seeking grace in every step he takes
His sight has turned inside himself to try and understand
The serenity of a clear blue mountain lake
And the colorado rocky mountain high
I?ve seen it rainin? fire in the sky
You can talk to God and listen to the casual reply
Rocky mountain high (high colorado) rocky mountain high (high colorado)
Now his life is full of wonder but his heart still knows some fear
Of a simple thing he cannot comprehend
Why they try to tear the mountains down to bring in a couple more
More people, more scars upon the land
And the colorado rocky mountain high
I?ve seen it rainin? fire in the sky
I know he?d be a poorer man if he never saw an eagle fly
Rocky mountain high
It?s a colorado rocky mountain high
I?ve seen it rainin? fire in the sky
Friends around the campfire and everybody?s high
Rocky mountain high (high colorado) rocky mountain high (high colorado)
Rocky mountain high (high colorado) rocky mountain high do de do

John McLaughlin is truly a guitar god. He even invented a few guitars of his own design.Originally posted by cykoe6John McLaughlin

Back in the late 60's-early 70's, Zappa had many interesting (and not so interesting) opening acts: Sea Train, Elvin Bishop, Sha Na Na (I used to know their manager, Ed Goodgold--his real name), etc. One interesting story was told to us by Ruth Underwood. At one point, some might remem- ber, the Mahavishnu Orchestra toured with Frank. It seems that Zappa demanded to be the main event, while John McLaughlin ALSO demanded to be the headliner! There was this running argument as to who was the bigger act, and who should be opener. Well, eventually, reluctantly, they both agreed to "trade off" each night. Ruth said this really pissed Zappa off. Also, Frank allegedly resented the fact that McLaughlin always walked around with an acoustic guitar, noodling on it everywhere he went. He practiced CONSTANTLY, which annoyed Frank, because, even though Frank was one of the greatest rock guitarists in the world, he hated to practice his guitar, and only played when on stage. It's weird to think about such an ego clash between two guitar giants. Then again, it's NOT so weird, when you think about it.Originally posted by AsianDivaGirlsWebDudeJohn McLaughlin is truly a guitar god. He even invented a few guitars of his own design.

Satriani? Clapton? Come on, people. Satriani is fast but blah. Eric Clapton is fairly mean but not even close to the best. Even Robbie Robertson outplayed Clapton when they stood on stage together for the Last Waltz.
I don't know if there is a "best" guitar player because there are different styles and different tastes. Here are those I would say are among the best, though:
Jimi Hendrix -Bite me, he rocked. It is in vogue these days to pretend he was overrated but that's bullshit.
Roy Buchannon - Probably my pick for "best" if I had to pick one but don't bother if you're just looking for another Hendrix clone.
Charo - No, I am not kidding. If you like Flamenco/Spanish/melodic guitar, Charo kicks mountains of ass.

One of the best series of concerts that I ever attended featured Jeff Beck (in support of his "Blow by Blow" album), and the Mahavishnu Orchestra (in support of their "Visions of the Emerald Beyond" album).Originally posted by GodsmackBack in the late 60's-early 70's, Zappa had many interesting (and not so interesting) opening acts: Sea Train, Elvin Bishop, Sha Na Na (I used to know their manager, Ed Goodgold--his real name), etc. One interesting story was told to us by Ruth Underwood. OMG, what nights of virtuoso musicianship, from the guitarists to the keyboard players, to the drummers, and on and on. I miss that in music today.
On that tour Jeff Beck and John MClaughlin's band alternated who would be the headline act, not out of ego, but out of mutual respect. At the end of the show though, both bands would come out...and the jams they did (and yes, it was totally improvised), were ethereal...one night they did a version of "Diamond Dust" that still makes me get goosebumps and yes, even cry, when I think about it - it was that beautiful and musically majestic.
