depends on terrain. but police can get radio service just about everywhere so id assume you can pick it up too. might need a stronger antena.

also try getting a good radar detector. do some research online for the better ones. dont buy the ones that most normal places sell.

Right this minute there is an AOR-8200 MK3 for about $745.00

They are the best portable scanners out there today, this one is in the U.K. which means you can get cellular frequencies, whereas in the U.S. they are blocked.

This unit has just about all the toys you would want.

I don't own this model, but I have put together similar systems for clients, you would be very happy with this purchase.

Mine is a few years old but it is great. It's a protable from Radio Shack and has a huge range of frequencies (I think it says 1.3 gigahertz on the front). Can even listen to FM radio on it. If you need further range on it you can untwist the rabbit ear and plug in an external antenna. Not sure what they run now, should be <$200, Radio Shack eventually put's everything on sale.

I use on in my home to listen to the local fire department as I used to be a fireman some years ago.

Keep in mind that using a police scanner in your vehicle is illegal in most states.

Also keep in mind that frequencies also change through county, state, and local jurisdictions. To me it would be pointless to have it. You would be better with a radar detector. Otherwise you would have one of the $150 bearcat scanners that just scans the "known" police frequencies which is quite large and you would miss the calls anyway. Not to mention you need a better scanner to pick up some of the newer trunked radios the state guys use.

IMHO it would be pretty pointless for you to get one.

EDIT: Unless you are only using it for when you get to your destination. While traveling it is pointless. If so you can look up frequencies online for your destination most likely, but unless you get a nice one you still wont get the trunked frequencies.

I think the scanner in the car would be more trouble than it is worth get a good radar detector and you'll be all set...

Sounds like the best thing for you would be a Uniden scanner. They are relatively inexpensive. You can get a decent one at Radio Shack too but most of those are just rebranded Unidens.

Most radio systems have gone to a trunked system (basically several agencies sharing a handful of frequencies). In order to follow a conversation on a trunked system, you would need a trunking scanner. Otherwise you'd hear the police on a frequency, and then immediately following that you might hear a city garbage man. With a trunked scanner, you only hear what you want to hear.

My last "real" job was working for Motorola's 2-way radio division so if you have any questions about radio, I can probably answer them. ;)

It's not illegal everywhere...not even a majority of cities have laws against carrying a scanner. Using one during the commission of a crime is a big no-no though.
