    Who here has actually taken part in combat

    ...operations.

    I served 12 years with the 82nd Airborne Divison...with the 325. I took part in Operation Urgent Fury in '83...Operation Just Cause in '89...I was part of the very first troops to be sent to Saudi in '90 which was to become known as Desert Shield...and was part of Operation Desert Storm...when my career was ended.

    Stand up and be counted...I salute you.

                      I'm just gonna back out of this thread and shut the fuck up...

                      People do what they think is right and who is the judge? Not me.

                      Why is it that almost every "war" since WW2 is actually "tainted" with other political bullshit? I can only think of one "just" police action since WW2 - the rest were bollocks - at a cost.

                                                      I am not a "complete idiot" and I did not come from a poor background. I come from a long line of professional soldiers. It was a vocation that I chose after I received an AA at JC...at the age of 22. My mentor wanted me to get a BA before I entered so that I could become an officer...but I had...had enough of school. After Desert Storm ended my career...I attended University...on my GI Bill. Even though I physically suffer from my service I do not regret it and I am only sorry that I could not complete my 30 years. It is among the most honorable vocations that exists...but certainly is not a career for the ordinary person.

                                                              All.. or at least the vast majority of these kinda people are not likely to have a clue. They are not "embedded" in the culture and would stand out like Osama on a US military parade ground.

                                                              I'm sure if they had a target, they may have some chance of a capture, but this is not some local mafia gang they are attempting to hit - these are dedicated (and apparently loyal) people who are willing to die for a cause and will use any guerilla tactics to fuck ya up.

                                                              They are obviously using "cells" where no one person knows the whole picture and these "cells" are also working independently. Hard to break that! :-)

                                                              The Basques have been playing the "terrorist game" since Roman times. The IRA are not "beatable" - they now sit at a conference table.

                                                              "Conventional" soldiers/mercinaries could have some luck, but odds are against it.... I'd think there is more chance of someone "within" producing some "intelligence".

                                                                                  Dunno what is was like in the States, but there was a time when there were "professions" that were "desirable" - like ya became a teacher, soldier, preacher or something like that.

                                                                                  I suspect being a soldier these days may not be in fashion :-) Tho I've known a few professional soldiers (who are now long retired and some now dead) and they were only what could be described as "men of honor" - you can always rely on them, no matter what. There was also some "code of honor" and this oozed out in bucket loads.

                                                                                  These folks never joined up just for a job - it was their career. If a war came along during their term of service - that was bad luck, but they served well for good and just reasons.

                                                                                  It may be that politics and... bad judgement on the part of leaders are bringing "discredit" to soliders in some way. "Wars" now seem to be initiated on the whims of idiots these days and without *real* justification - it's a kind of abuse of the forces.

I would be there right now if they wouldn't have cut the funding for me to go. I guess I can say I lucked out. However, 35 from my unit did go and will be there for at least another 2 years.

                                                                                                          i was thinking about joining the reserves, wanted in the air force reserves but at the time they didn't let people join it unless they already worked in the army reserves. so i said fuck it.

                                                                                                          was gonna let them pay for school, but i didn't want to waste 5 years after school as a jag, would have went to law school if it wasn't on my tab for sure. so i wouldn't have been in combat anyways, plus i'm too smart to be a soldier.

                                                                                                                      Although I was college prep all through high school, the thought of four or more years of schooling bored me to tears. I graduated high school six months early and with nothing to do I joined the Marines. Both my father and my grandfather were Marines (both died in combat), so the Marines was the way to go for me.

                                                                                                                      The Marines changed my life. I went from a skinny kid with no self confidence to a young man who was ready to take on the world - and go to war if needed.

                                                                                                                      I think that everyone should serve at least a few years in the military. It will change the way they look at life.
