If you're talking about girls who cut themself they don't do it because they enjoy it. They do it to make some sort of balance to whatever major problem they got in their life. The pain they get from cutting themself is easier to handle than the inner pain they might have because they decide when and how they do it. The inner pain they might have is caused by other people and they can't control that. So it's about control.
My sister-in-law has both anorexia and bulimia and is cutting herself and the doctor explained it that way when she was brought to the hospital last time.Comment

One of the biggest reason for cutting is numbness. Particularly in girls that have been sexually abused from an early age. They go through the first part of their life not even realising that what is happening to them isn't right. Then something happens, like, they spend a night at a friend's house and realise their friend's father doesn't touch her like that, and they start to realise something's not quite right. Then they realise what's going on but they're too scared to do anything about it. They eventually learn to detatch themselves from the situation, but that causes a numbness and they need pain to feel again. And if they don't cut, they bite or scratch at themselves. But even after the abuse has stopped, they will continue to become numb sometimes when they have flashbacks, dreams, or just have vivid memories and they will self injure again. It's a really hard cycle for them to break.
