I want to get my motorcycle license...

I am bored lately... signed up at the gym (again) today, and I want to learn how to drive a bike!

would be super hot to have a Ducati to take out on hot summer days when I dont feel like driving a car...

any advice people here can give me?

super hot days + leather jackets & heavy jeans = sux

bikes are best during soring/fall unless you like sweating balls

now nighttime riding on a ducati = rockin, in the summer

get yourslef a beat up shitty 400cc to 500cc bike first. learn how to ride on that. i bet you'll probably drop it a few times in the first week or two. after a few months of riding it, then buy yourself a decent 600cc to 750cc

summer is the best time to ride, nice heat- alot of grip on the road.

Hot days in a jacket and jeans is not bad at all as the breeze when you are going at a decent speeds takes away any discomfort.

You are in canada right? Try looking into motorcycle safety classes. Make sure you get all the right gear and don't get a bike above 600cc as your first bike. Try to get a used bike as you are probably gonna drop your first bike and shiny new fairings can cost a bundle.

with the roads and highways in Montreal?

I've pondered getting my 6A numerous times, but I drove a few fast bikes and it's just too easy to kill yourself, no matter how 'careful' you are

Theres risks in life to everything, most accidents are caused by rider error due to inexperience. The only thing u can do is ride within your limits, wear all your gear, get some seat time so you have the experience and the necessary skills to watch out for those asshole drivers.

Tell me about it, I spent a week or so in the hospital when I was about 15 or 16 when I got hit by a car on my little 50cc scooter, she ran right throught a stop sign and I blanked out, I don't remember hitting the van, and making sweet love to the asphalt as I slid face first about 15 feet, or the time in the hospital

I started riding with a 750 Magna. Was ok. Eventually got rid of it. Wanted more power.

if you don't want to die by running yourself into a wall because you can't control your bike.. please take the MSF course.

but aside from that i've had 4 friends die in the past 2 years due to bike accidents, 3 were not at fault.

Actually no, they blamed it on me, since I hit the van where some baby was, and they said I was driving 'like a mofo' which is probably weren't, but it's in the past

You can take the course here in the states and once u pass u can get your license without going thru the dept of motor vehicles and taking their riding test.

but you are in canada right?

They changed the law on motorcycle permits, it's more complicated now to get a licence.

i had a yamaha r1 in summer2004 then it was stolen right in front of my house

                                                      same exact one i had:

as far as the license, over here it's only a weekend course you need to take.

Bdjuf here is how you do it :

1st : You gotta take it NOW ... call TODAY if you want to have your liscences ready for next year.

You'll get a 1 month "temporary" permit only for the classes.

Then you'll get a 6 months "probatory" permit . With this permit, you'll only be able to drive with somebody else (another bike).

So if you take it now, you'll have enough time to ride alone next summer ;) since the winter counts too

take a safety course before anything, i took one for $25 and learned tons of stuff and only cost $25. i bought a cheap 500cc bike in good condition for $2,300. i'm gonna upgrade next year i think but its great to start out on. i havent dropped it yet, so dont listen to people saying "you will drop it at first for sure", you will with that mentality.

Get a P.O.S.bike to start out with. I agree with those who said it. You shouldn't expect to drop it though. If you are smart and don't ride like a jackass you'll be just fine. Take safety classes. I've been on two wheels longer than 4 and I'll say that once you've got some learning under your belt I recommend a BMW, Ducati or a Harley.

true the italian bikes are very pretty---that is their main virtue.

the suzuki or honda 45 degree twin cylinder variants are much better and more reliable bikes, and much easier to maintain.

most of ducati's appeal is for folks who require the ego boost of riding an "exotic" italian bike---truth is the jap bikes of same displacement smoke them in most every performance category until you get to superbike class, and only then is the ducati mildly competitive, but that is a $40K ducati unavailable to the consumer biker. currently the suzuki is consistantly the top superbike with re: to high performance and occasionally honda, and those are mostly stock bikes.

if you want a beginning sport bike i would suggest some sort of 600-750cc jap sport bike as others here have suggested. more reliable, better performance, same chick magnet potential.

you must wear protection no matter what the outside temps are---helmet at all times, if it is too hot to wear leather you should have a padded fabric jacket designed for motorcycling. (waxed cotton belstaff, etc). proper gloves, newest helmets have adjustable ventilation systems---you can ride faster wearing a helmet, and riding a sportbike sans helmet brands you immediately as a novice. and a june bug hit directly in the eye at just 60mph can lose your eye permanently. you should have proper boots also for sportbike riding---these come up on the calf, have ankle and arch protection and typically toe and arch support to hold the foot on the peg and protect the top of foot during upshifting. (figure minimum $1000~usd for proper sportbike riding gear).

you WILL fall off if you are a beginning sportbike rider. i bought my first motorcycle from a guy who was in a wheelchair after breaking his back his first week on a sport bike. he was showing his buddies his new "skill" at doing a wheelie. he spent his insurance money building a ramp so he could get into his house. his first motorcycle. he told me he would never walk again and gave me a good deal on his bike. sportbikes are not too forgiving of incompetence---buying a sportbike does accelerate the natural selection process, as it allows the less intelligent members of the specie to incapacitate themselves during their prime reproductive years. only the smart survive.

you need to minimize the damage of your first fall, which statistically will usually result from loss of traction on wet oil right after a rain, or losing the rear end in a patch of gravel while you are hotdogging your "sport" bike or trying to keep up with your buddies in the curves---sportbikes just beg "pushing the envelope" and you will "push the envelope". how you are dressed will determine the outcome.

your personal safety should be your number one concern, not what type of sportbike.

                                                                    Comment

My aunt married a guy who has a great big bike (Gold something) and I went with him Saturday. He belongs to some kind of club and they get together once or twice a month and take turns cooking out on the grill, then they all ride somewhere together.

I really, really liked it, except for the clothing part. I rode with a neighbor's goofy ass brother a couple of weeks ago and he didn't care what I wore, as long as I had a helmet on. These people Saturday were decked out in all this black leather and official motorcycle uniform stuff. Of course, I don't have any of that shit and have zero desire to ride around in the sweltering heat here with all that on. I was planning on wearing a tank top and shorts so I could get some sun while we were riding, lol!

Then my uncle tells me that I can't do that because the other motorcycle group people will not like it and probably won't let me go. What the fuck business is it of theirs?? I ended up wearing jeans and a jacket that was my aunt's (she hates it too), but I wasn't very comfortable. I think I want to be a motorcycle rider, but I don't want to wear the uniforms.

Dukes are monsters, i have rode quite a few and they are real rocket ships, not for the unexperienced rider. Plus they are Fucking Expensive and body parts for them as alot of $$$$ to replace.
