The only guarantee of "free speech" afforded to Americans by the U.S. Constitution is that the government will not persecute you for speaking out against their actions. Everyone thinks the first amendment right to free speech applies to all kinds of situations, but in reality it doesn't. It's been twisted around in pretzel knots until very few people actually understand what the first amendment means.
