    Generally speakings earnings over 100K are taxed anywhere from 40% - 53% depending on the province (seems like all more heavily populated areas had the higher taxes)

                            Let's talk housing. The same house here costing $150K costs up to five times that in Toronto or Vancouver.

                            $200k goes quite a long way here.

                            Someone selling their home in Toronto for $500K could come here, buy an even better home for $250k and bank the rest.


                            And they wouldn't have to listen to trains rumbling past their kitchen window like Abner's family does.

I didn't compare cost of living in Canada to the cost of living in the US. But what other big ticket items besides houses cost far less in Canada that in the US? What about plasma TV's, or perhaps nice cars? How do costs of finer restaurants compare to the US costs?

                                                                                                                                It just seems to me that for those people who have more expensive all-around tastes, that Canada would cost them more money with those tax rates.

                                                                                                                                                            Not really, but again, it all depends on where you go. I can only speak as to how it is here. It's different in other parts of Canada.

                                                                                                                                                            A good meal out at a fine restaurant can easily run you $100-$150 for you and your lady here, but so can it in many parts of the US. Now, subtract the US exchange rate of just under 30 cents on the dollar or 30% and you've got savings.

                                                                                                                                                            As for big-ticket purchases like cars and TV's, again it's all in where you buy from. One example is this: I live in Winnipeg, but if I want a deal at a US location all I need do in many cases is simply go online and make my purchase. If I can get something cheaper on the web, and I often do, I buy it. I get charged a duty when it comes over the border and it's at my door.

                                                                                                                                                            Rent: The rent on a shitty apartment in many cities in N. America is $1000-$1500/mo. In Winnipeg you can get a pretty nice apartment for $500-$800/mo.

                                                                                                                                                            You can get quite a shitload of groceries here for $300 bucks, but again it depends on where you shop. Some things like movies are pricey but that's the same as anywhere you go. The real savings is in the major life-purchases, like a home, real estate, cottage etc.
