Best way to cut through all that bullshit:
Simply ask the woman for coffee, after you have had a conversation of course.
This works in several ways. Coffee is not intimdating and requires no large amount of time togeather should things not start out right. It is casual and doesn't reak of the get drinks thing which says, "Hey I want to get you drunk in the hope that you will have sex with me later." it also is better than a dinner invite for the same reason, dinner means atleast an hour togeather, and should things not click seems an intimidating offer. Keep in mind, once the invite is out the every thing that can go wrong scenario fast forwards through the brain.
Coffee, on the other hand, is a light casual activitiy with minimal time commitment, but room to move from there should things click. Also, coffee invites let the woman know you want to share some time talking and getting to know each other in a relaxed atmosphere. It doesn't blast out, "He is hitting on me because he wants to blast a load in my left eye" It says, "He wants to hang out and chat." It's almost too friendly in a way, but it works.
The local coffee shops know me well. :D
