My mom is not poor, owns her own home, 1 car, relatively cool job, doesnt work hard - been on her own since she had me at 20.
She has been reduced to living in motels with my brothers, my grandmother, uncles, my dad etc... not only living off of credit cards because banking is not yet working for residents who lived there, but having to accept "relief checks" from her home insurance company. And stand in line with the poorest of the poor as well.
So, while its easy to say people will be spending it on alcohol and KOOLs - please realize there are people even like my mom and dad who now are left without jobs, and have already spent over $2,000 evacuating, feeding all family members every day fast food, and hotel rooms, supplies, gas, etc... FEMA will not pay her credit cards off nor does she expect them to. She knows she is lucky to even have that option.
As someone who knows more than a dozen WHITE PEOPLE who will be accepting need this way, its pretty offensive to assume most are bnlack an going to buy beer and KOOls.

Race aside, it is probably not the best idea to give people free reign with public money. What comes to mind for me is Flexible Spending accounts that many people have through their work. For anyone not familiar with Flex Spending plans, it's tax free money that you can use for medical and health services and certain supplies.
You must submit receipts and only qualified purchases are allowed.
Just like WIC only certain food products are WIC approved.
I think it's a great thing that the government is empowering these people. I have no doubt some may misappropriate this money. I think that given the despair and depravity I'm confident that most will do the right thing and use this as a step up and a foothold to get their lives back together.You deserve to make more money.
