Examination of newspaper archival records dating back to the 1950?s and 1960?s reveal the same types of severe and fatal attacks occurring then as today. The only difference is the breed of dog responsible for these events. A random study of 74 severe and fatal attacks reported in the Evening Bulletin (Philadelphia, PA) from 1964-1968, show no severe or fatal attacks by Rottweilers and only one attack attributed to a Pit-Bull-type dog. The dogs involved in most of these incidents were the breeds that were popular at the time.
Who gives a shit what happened in 1964 - 1968. The fact is these dogs have become popular with the wrong types of people. Sure you can argue all day long, that it's not the dog but the owner and I can somewhat agree. However the simple fact is most people that have these kinds of dogs "are" the wrong people and are very likely to raise a dog the wrong way. Which resualts in more and more dogs that are likely to attack.
Sure reports may show that AK47's and M4's are less likely to be used in a gun crime.. but dose that mean it's ok for people to walk around on the streets with them? Simple fact is dogs like these are a loaded weapons waiting to go off.In November, you can vote for America's next president or its first dictator.Comment

Yes there was a story behind that. The animal control officer was certainly under prepared. From what I understand the dog was later caught and put down.
As an owner of 2 Rotts I can sympathise with responsible owners of pitbulls (the owner in that video was obviously not responsible). The reputation these animals have in the news is very bad. The reason is the true ignorance of people.
Not long ago a young adult was almost mauled to death by a St. Bernard not far from me. The shit didn't even make the news. If it was a pit or Rott it would have been all over the news.Living in Virtual Reality

yea I can fully agree with you.. I personally know people that have had a few Rotts and they were raised well and were good dogs. I agree that it's harder on "good" owners, however I really believe the bad owners outweighed the good ones. I personally think there should be restrictions on whom owns these kinds of dogs. I think there should be some sort of certification course and the owners should have to prove that they can provide a approved fenced in area that the dog can't get out of and not just a chain in the back yard.Originally posted by Furious_Male

Dogs are direct reflections of their owners and how they were trained, sure some breeds may be more likely to do certain things than other breeds, like my little Shetland Sheepdog (Sheltie) is a barking machine, anyone that knows anything about Shelties knows that they are probably the most barking dogs there are, but 99.9% of the time if she is getting out of hand and I yell at her she is gonna stop.
I also have a dog that is 3/4 German Shepherd and 1/4 Rotweiler, and she is the sweetest dog I have ever had or seen, and I was raised with Collies, its pretty hard to be nicer than Lassie, hahaha
She lets my 15 month old daughter ride her and climb all over her, I trust her more with my daughter than I do my 20 pound harmless Sheltie. But even though I am 99.9999% sure that she would never even harm a fly I still use the utmost caution when she meets new people or when she is playing with my kid, because I know that if she did turn on somebody its not gonna be a pretty site. And because of that fact I have taken great care to train her to "stop" whether that be to stop chewing on the bottom of the couch, or if someday she did happen to turn on someone I know that no matter what if I tell her to stop, she will infact stop.
I guess my point is that I have never seen a puppy that was mean and vicious from the get go, but I have met plenty of jackasses and wanna be "hard" motherfuckers that have mean ass dogs.Comment

neither do Pit Bulls. The locking jaws are a myth, their bite is no different than any other large dog. What sets a Pit apart is their power, speed, near immunity to pain plus %100 commitment to the attack. It's a shame pitbulls get such a bad rap for something that HUMANS breed/train/socialize them to do. The lady repeatedly warned the animal control officer to get off the property with the camera. Then she verbally warned both the cameraman and the woman " im going to let the dog out if you dont get off my property " , sure enough they dont listen and the woman opens the door and says "sic em" twice.. The pitbull then grabbed the woman by the arm and attempted to pull her off the property. A Man with a stick hits the dog an the dg releases its grip, but the black lady made a bad mistake. Instead of going off the property she went again in the direction of the house and also grabbed the owner to hide behind her. The dog now thinks its owner is being attacked so it bites again, and eventually releases after the owner gives it permission..
This dog is very highly trained and did its job perfectly..
The owner was obviously cranky, but the animal control officer was insane not to ignore repeated warnings. She should have come back with some police officers.
My dog and my home is my sanctuary and if anyone ignores repeated warnings to leave , they would suffer the same fate..
I dont see any paperwork or warrant in that ladies hands..hatisblack at yahoo.comComment

Society needs to go after the owners. Abusing a dog is still barely prosecutable except in exceptional cases and even if convicted you're unlikey to get more than a small fine. Hold the owners responsible and everything will change. If a dog bites someone, charge the owner with assault. If a dog kills someone, charge the owner with reckless manslaughter. (obviously not in cases where the dog was actually protecting you from a real threat)
In the 60s-70s it was dobermans people thought were the scary killers, in the 70s-80s it shifted from dobermans to rottweilers, in the 80s-90s it shifted to 'pitbulls'. It's all media driven. Call the local TV news and say your neighbors golden retriever bit you, and they won't be interested, but call them and say it was a pitbull attack, and you'll have reporters swarming all over your yard.
Before you consider banning one breed, wonder what the next breed will be to become trendy in the ghetto. Do you want these idiots trading up from a 50lb pitbull to a 250lb mastiff? Maybe they'll pick YOUR dogs breed? Own a labrador retriever? On those 'Animal Cop' shows I've seen just as many black labs confiscated from gangbangers as pitbulls. And speaking of those shows, watch them and youll see a lot of pitbulls (or, mostly, crosses and mutts that kindof look like what people think pitbulls are) ... you'll see what these pits have had to suffer through, yet be shocked that even after years of abuse at the hands of humans most of them remain very friendly to the shelter staff.Comment

The whole question of banning them is insane.
Bad people who train their dogs "badly" will always exist, and they will always have dogs. If pitbulls were banned they would move on to the next breed and the next until all we had left were pussy dogs with no teeth..
It would be like banning strong humans because they contain the ability to kill other people, or banning black people because they kill more than any other breed of human.
Cop dogs( german shephards) bite more people than all other dogs combined, but they do it with a reason, does that make them inherently more dangerous than any other dog ?? It might make cop dogs more dangerous , but it doesn't make german shephards more dangerous.hatisblack at yahoo.comComment

Actually, it's all about how you bring the dog up. I myself own a pitbull/german sheppard mix and even though he sometimes barks at strangers (which is normal for most dogs), he's a BIG baby, he'd never hurt anyone.

Any dog when provoked can attack. I owned an irish setter that tore my cousins face up one time because she kept hitting my little brothers. The dog was chained up at the time too. She still has scars on her face 30 years later.
I have owned hunting pit bulls that wouldnt harm a human but would attack anything else that moved.
I agree that the owners have alot to do with the dogs agression.
Then we have instances where dogs group together and form a pack..which brings on agressive behavior and can result in attacks.
That video is years old..but still scary...She incurred some serious injuries from that attack.Comment

If you look at numbers most deaths are happening to children not adults. A pitt is far to light to kill most adults, I can not tell you the amount of times I have seen them picked up and slung when they do latch on.
A pittbull's jaws do not have some kind of locking mechanism, the dog can let go when it wants to, it just chooses not to. The name says it all Pittbull as in Pit and Bull which is exactly what the dogs were bred for. They would bet on the outcome of a fight between multiple dogs and an adult bull or bear. The animal has an undying devotion to its owners and will fight till the death for the safety of its master, the master's friends/family and itself. Dogs kill other animals by shaking them to weaken them as well as to tear large peices off to do damage. The human body in adult form is way to resilent for that unless you are elderly. A pittbull is not like a lion or a cheetah where it has a pre-disposed way of killing a human such as the cheetah's throat bite or the lion's spinal bite. The bite is to tell you "get away or I will continue to do this" the dog can not kill you by latching on to your arm, leg or foot, that is just silly.
Seen people experienced with Pitts get bitten by other people's dogs, dog usually winds up slung off/slammed into the ground or they shove whatever part the dog has bitten (usually a hand) down the dog's throat, the idea is not to pull away because this will cause the dog to hold on harder. So saying the dog is trying to kill you and hitting it will cause it to want to kill you more does not sound like any pittbull attack I have ever seen.
Most of the dogs are used in fighting, it has very little to do with protection, no dog can fight a bullet and once again pitts are far to light unless they are back bred with mastiff and rarely is this done with a fighting dog since it will be large and slow. It is however done in the south to hunt boars where their bravery and tenacity are a must for surviving the hunt.even ADULTS need TOYS

you can hold them off for a while, but eventually the loss of blood will bring you down into mauling range. If one attacks you you're going to need some help. Your best chance is if they're wearing a collar, THEN and only then you can push them to the ground and hold them there if you're strong enough. And you can get your hands on the collar without losing some fingers.Originally posted by jade_dragon

I've also seen video of a Pit attacking a man dressed up for it, in one of those dog suits that they use to train police dogs. The Pit hit him chest high and knocked him completely off his feet and onto his back. Dogs are built different than we are, just like chimps are built differently than us. A 65 lb monkey is stronger than a full grown man, they've proved it through rope pulling experiments in zoos. A Pit can kill a monkey.
It's a mistake to think that Pits are mad killers. It's a far more serious mistake to think you can whip one in a fair fight. You shouldn't fear them unreasonably, but you should definitely have a healthy amount of respect for what they can do.Comment

Little-known facts about Pit Bulls:
Pit Bulls serve as therapy/service dogs. The Chako Rescue Association has Pit Bull therapy dogs in Texas, Utah and California. Helen Keller even had a Pit Bull as her canine companion and helper. Cheyenne and Dakota are a team of hard-working Search-and-Rescue Pit Bulls in Sacramento, California. They play an important role in their community by locating missing people in conjunction with the local Sheriff. In their off-duty hours, they do charity work as therapy dogs.
...
Pit Bulls are one of the most stable people-friendly dogs in existence. The National Canine Temperament Testing Association tested 122 breeds, and Pit Bulls placed the 4th highest with a 95% passing rate.
Dispelling some myths about Pit Bulls:
-Is it true that Pit Bulls can lock their jaw?
The infamous locking jaw is a myth. The American Pit Bull Terrier and related breeds are physiologically no different from any other breed of dog. All dogs are from the same species and none have locking jaws. Dr. I Lehr Brisbin of the University of Georgia states, "To the best of our knowledge, there are no published scientific studies that would allow any meaningful comparison to be made of the biting power of various breeds of dogs. There are, moreover, compelling technical reasons why such data describing biting power in terms of 'pounds per square inch' can never be collected in a meaningful way. All figures describing biting power in such terms can be traced to either unfounded rumor or, in some cases, to newspaper articles with no foundation in factual data." Furthermore, Dr. Brisbin states, "The few studies which have been conducted of the structure of the skulls, mandibles and teeth of pit bulls show that, in proportion to their size, their jaw structure and thus its inferred functional morphology, is no different than that of any breed of dog. There is absolutely no evidence for the existence of any kind of 'locking mechanism' unique to the structure of the jaw and/or teeth of the American Pit Bull Terrier."
-Are Pit Bulls naturally aggressive towards humans?
While many Pit Bulls do tend to be aggressive towards other DOGS (as are most terriers), the normal, well raised Pit Bull has NO human-aggressive tendencies! In fact, human-aggression was actually bred out of the breed. The majority of Pit Bulls are affectionate, intelligent, trainable dogs. In fact, the highest obedience trial record of all time is held by an American Pit Bull Terrier named Maddy!
-Can Pit Bulls "turn" on people?
In fact, no breed of dog does. Dog aggression is nearly always preceded by some kind of warning, and there is always a reason behind the attack. However, many inexperienced owners do not recognize the dog's behavior as aggression, or refuse to acknowledge it as a warning sign. The only exception I can think of is Springer Rage, a rare and controversial neurological condition that manifests itself as a spontaneous attack, followed by confusion, and then a return to normal behavior. Pit Bulls are NOT prone to this condition. There are individual dogs of any breed that may be more aggressive to others. My brother has always kept purebred pitbulls, and they are the nicest dogs you'll ever meet. My current dog is 1/2 pitbull, and he plays with my friends purebred pitbulls when they come to visit. I also take him to the dogpark almost every day, where he plays with many different breeds including pitbulls. Never once have I seen any pitbull be agressive. My pit-cross adores my cat, and even though she's cranky and often takes an unprovoked swipe at him and cuts his face with her claws, he never gets upset or angry about it. When my roommates cat had kittens, he loved them so much he would cry when you took them away from him.Pit bulls are famous, in circles of knowledgeable dog people, for the love and loyalty they bestow on anyone who shows them a smidgen of kindness.
--Linda Wilson-Fuoco, journalist
In my opinion, Pit bulls are the least likely to be human aggressive. On the whole, you have to do a lot of work to make them aggressive to people.
--Sue Frisch, Dessin Animal Shelter manager
Pit bulls are especially good at pleasing people since they are strong and smart, they learn quickly and they are very adaptable."
