Been having problems with an ibm laptop, sometimes it just instantly shuts off, no bluescreen or anything, just instant off. I figure this has to be a hardware problem, first thing that came to mind is ram. But have run a lot of tests on ram and it "seems" ok. Then i thought heat, and it may be, but its happened at times that make me doubt that.
Over on the photoshop forums there has been a long time thread about hp laptops with this problem running ps 7 or cs, and ps is what i first noticed this with. They have apparently decided that its a motherboard problem, quote;
The (electrical) problem is triggered by computer operations that use the bus between the processor and the ram for an excessive number of microseconds. This problem can be triggered by the operating system or other applications; however, it often appears when using photoshop or photoshop album because few other applications move memory as rapidly as Photoshop or process data as intensely as Photoshop Album during certain operations. For example, when Photoshop Album generates thumbnails while importing files, it uses the MMXCore extension (MMXCore.8bx) extensively.....
I disabled the .8bx files in ps and the problem stopped, but now its occurring when dealing with video conversion/editing. I havent been able to find anyone else that has had this problem with ibms but it sounds the same as the hp 7000 problem. Anybody ever heard of this?
Difficult to take it in for any kind of service right now because i am traveling with it, any suggestions on what to look for myself would be appreciated.
