What exactly is Umetered Bandwidth

That sounds right, but I'm no expert. Anyone else?

Umnetered means that provider does not meter your bandiwdth usage, it just gives you couple mbits of throughput. For example ISP setup you 10mbit uplink line, and if you use near 100% of its available speed (this is theoreticaly 1MB/s) through one month you will be able to push around 3500GB.

However it is better to use metered option where you have 3500GB on 100mbit uplink, because in case of sudden traffic increase you will have more bandwidth available to clients (compare 1MB/s to 10MB/s).

You think metered is better? If I was a consumer, I would want unmetered since I don't want to over use the BW and get charged with crazy amount of $$$ on next billing cycle. Then again... just my personal opinion.

Here are generally accepted definitions in the hosting community.

1. Dedicated Unmetered Bandwidth: the bandwidth is un-shared with other customers, you will able to use your bandwidth 24/7/365. Ex: If you buy 20Mbps dedicated unmetered bandwidth, the provider may cap your server's switch port at 20Mbps, which you can push 24/7/365. If do so, you can get near 6600GB per month.

2. Shared Unmetered Bandwidth: you can use as much bandwidth as you can, but the bandwidth will be shared with other customers which meant that you can't use your fully unmetered amount at 24/7/365. Ex: 100Mbps shared unmetered bandwith, which means that your server will be on 100Mbps connection and shared it with others. The provider may let you know how much GB you should expect to get per month. If they don't show this, just ask them.
