You have no right to fire somebody because you disagree with their political choice, or their car decorations.Originally posted by jennym
Why do you assume that everyone who doesn't agree with you is Republican? Why is it her RIGHT to work anywhere she wants? Why isn't it a business owners right to fire anybody he wants? I don't think anyone in this thread said the guy was their hero. We are just defending his right to run his company any way he chooses.
If the woman was not doing her job that is one thing, but for the reasons listed is not right.
This has fucking nothing to do with running his company the way he wants to and your fooling yourself if you truely believe this has anything to do with running his company.
Who his employees vote for has absolutly nothing to do with the inside operations of this company.
This woman has a right to feed her children, pay her bills, and provide her family with shelter regardless of who she votes for and whatever sticker she decides to put on her car.
Good for her for standing up for her rights and fuck anybody that tries to take them away from her.Comment

I am sure he would have settled for her not bringing her car onto his property with the sticker on it. Seriously, if he wanted to walk around his property and not see that bumper sticker, then that is his right.
BTW, Dawgy is a fucktard.
I just wanted to throw that in there, because I think on GFY, if you disagree with someone you have to call them a childish name or you get banned.
J/K Dawgy. I actually enjoy a nice heated debate where people can voice their opinions in a mature manner.
we'll never know if he gave her that option...
i do wonder tho, if i showed up and parked a car with a kerry sticker on his lot as a customer wanting to buy insulation, if he'd tell me i could only buy from him if i remove that sticker... i bet not.the revolution is coming.Comment

I think we both agree he is a dickhead. As for the customer part, I think we ALL know the answer to that.

There are laws governing the way people can be hired and fired and you cannot simply fire someone for any reason you like. There must be a compentency or legal issue involved.
And lets get to the underlying issue here. This country was founded in large part due to the freedom of experssion our forefathers so badley wanted and it has been our battle cry ever since. Our freedom of experssion (what allows us to be porn webmasters) is the most sacred value we have, that is why it is the FIRST ammendment.
You can disagree with your employee all you want, but you canot deny them the right to freely express themselves. Especially when it is a sticker on a car. This does not affect business at all, it is not something that hurts somebody else and is certaintly not in any ones way.
One could argue easily the car is HER property, so he had no right to tell her a thing about her car. If it is parked on HIS property it is because as an employeer it is his responsibilioty to provide adequate parking for his employees.
If she had hung a sign outside her cubicle or office he would be well within his right to ask her to remove it as long as it pertains to ALL political ads or signs. That can be seen as a distraction in the workplace as the workplace is not a place to sway voters, but to get work done.
But HER car is something completly different.
And we could also get into a good ethical discussion about the responsibility employeers have to their employees. You cannot take food off the table just because you disagree with their political choice.
If this guy is such a great patriot American (and I assume he thinks he is because all Republicans do) then he should fundamentally respect her freedom of expression and agree to disagree because it is our right are American's to have any opinion we see fit and to be able to express it. Express it, so long as it does not cause harm to another person or invade ones space. I think you would have serious problems trying to show how a window sticker could cause harm or interfeer with someones right to ignore it.Comment

A vehicle is private property and that should be the end of the arguement. If she was attaching stickers to someone elses property, that would be different. But her car is not his property, it's hers.
I also find the number of americans now willing to abandon the right we all should have to express ourselves, in favor of not having to see/hear something they don't like, to be truely frightening.Comment

Kerry hires Alabama woman fired after displaying Kerry bumper sticker
"DETROIT A woman fired for displaying a John Kerry sticker now has a job with the White House hopeful's campaign."
link
Last Thursday she was fired from her job at an Alabama insulation company for refusing to remove a John Kerry sticker from her car's windshield, and left with an uncertain future.
A few days -- and a couple of local newspaper articles later -- Gobbell found herself getting a job offer from Kerry himself.
When Gobbell, 41, returned to her Moulton, Ala., home early this week after a discouraging meeting with her former employer, she picked up the phone to hear Kerry's voice.
The Democratic presidential candidate introduced himself, said Gobbell, and told her he regretted what had happened to her. "He said he was proud of me for standing up for what I believed in," she said.
Near the end of their short conversation, Gobbell said Kerry told her, "You let him know you work for John Kerry. You're hired."Comment

yes, Federal law supercedes state law, however, there is no Federal law that says you can't tell someone what kind of bumperstickers they can put on cars parked on your property.Originally posted by titmowse

looks to me like the state of alabama says, if you feel you've been discriminated against by an employer, you can go to the fed:
http://www.alalabor.state.al.us/job_...ation_laws.htm
interestingly, they allow joining unions there:
Does Alabama have any Right to Work Laws?
Yes Alabama workers may choose to join a union or decline to do so. Refer to ?25-7-30. Right to Work Law?
