I have recently been debating on whether or not to buy my first gun. I want one not just for protection but also for recreational use at the range. I dont know too much about guns so if anyone could help me out, as to which ones to buy and so on I would appreciate it very much. Thanks.

Get a ruger single six 357 or 44 mag. Its a revolver fun to shoot and since its single action there is less chance of accidentaly firing it. But if you do shoot something with it like a cement block... the fucking block explodes!!! Its awesome. -

My first question is, do you currently have experience with firearms? Like military or having used them often. Below are my answers.
YES I have Experience - Buy either a moderatly priced 9MM or 22 to practice with and practice often on it's firing, cleaning, and assembly.
NO I have no experience - You SHOULD not buy a gun until you take a firearms safety course. It will do 2 things, first it will give you an idea of what kind of firearm you'd like to own. Secondly, it will also show you how to operate it without killing yourself or more importantly someone else by accident.

if you've never shot a gun. you should definately get comfortable with them first by getting a 22. Ruger Mark II.
The next question would be - body size/frame. Cuz some people just aren't big enough to fire certain guns. Easiest way to figure that out - is go to the gun range and try out several different guns to find the one that fits your hand / body size the best. I'm partial to 357's and 38's - for modest power and kickComment

Great answer couldnt agree with you more. My first gun was a S&W .40 cal great gun to learn on. But go with a 9mm or .22. revolvers are nice simple tools for self defense, very reliable, etc...
as for calibre...go to a shooting range and rent a few different guns and see what feels comfortable for you to handle...
personally I like the 40 S&W or .45...
