I certainly can say when something is wrong, and in this case, you are wrong, on so very many points. Rather than dig your heels in, why not relax your position a little and learn from some of the more informed comments on this thread?

You do have the ability to put aside what you think you know and learn the truth, don't you?

      Ofcourse.....otherwise I wouldn't get very far in business =)

However, in matters of opinions, you can only present arguments in discussion to try and change my opinion. You can't tell me what my opinion should be.

Thus far, not one of you has presented a strong enough argument to sway my opinion. Example, Shelly said one guy killed a beatle and one guy killed for a beatle.....I'm sure there was atleast a few people who committed suicide over Kurt Cobain's death, don't you think? I consider that an effect on people.

Anyhow, if I see a comment that gives me something to think about, perhaps my opinion will change. If not, it won't change....I don't feel you can compare two intangibles under different circumstances

What I'm saying is that in 20 years, people might consider Nirvana to have a had a huge impact on music, in exactly the same way you consider the beatles to have had effect now.

See the way it works is, the young people who enjoyed the beatles in their time, are the ones defending them now. In 20 years, the cycle will change, and the people who enjoyed Nirvana will be that age and defend them.

Life is cycles. Even you can udnerstand a circle right ???

and i'm saying no they will not be looked upon that way....... the same way in 20 years electricity will still have had a much more profound impact on the way peop[le live today than the PC

look Kurt Nobrain.....they are a stellar band but will never be remembered as having as big of an impact as the beatles....your opinion may be that they have had that on you ......and its not opinion it is fact......even if every garage band from now until 20 years from now says Nirvana changed the world they will still have never have the impact that the Beatles have had and will continiue to have.....

Charlie Browns teacher to you... but the voice of reason to most others......I can't correct in one post what is appears to be painfully obvious.....in that you are not listening just running the mouth....piss with me all you want I enjoy watching people continue to make themselves look retarded......

I am not kidding when I say you are comparing Elvis to Justin Timberlake here.......

I am fine knowing the reality it is rather amusing to see someone continue to try and polish a turd...

Elvis stated everything with "That's all right mama"
And the Beattles are miles ahead of Nirvana ...

First, when Nirvana first came out I was listening to some dance like Outhere Brothers and pop-punk like Green Day and BLink-182. I wasn't into them until few years later.

Second, I like a lot of Beatles songs.

Third, you are missing my point which is IN MY OPINION you cannot compare apples and oranges. You cannot tell which had a bigger impact because they were at two VERY different times and judging them now isn't fair either as one has been around much longer.

Again, the point none of you seem to get, is that this is MY opinion. Unless you present a compelling argument, which you don't seem to be able to do, that's not going to change it seems......

Instead of focusing on trashing my thought, why don't you try giving me something interesting to consider

It's the same way with Elvis vs. Beatles as is Beatles vs. Nirvana (I love them all, god bless them) Beatles were heavily influenced by Elvis as was Kurt by some Beatles albums.
Any vote for Beatles is automaticcally a vote for Elvis, thus any vote for Nirvana is a vote for Beatles..

Nuff said, I was just thinking that the original thread starter was beginning to feel ridiculous in the face of overwhelming factual proof presented in this thread but it looks like he enjoys munching on his feet..bon appetit

yeah but only for their fashion sense ;)

I'm sure this has already been said in this thread, but I can't be arsed to read the whole thing. Don't believe anyone who says that Elvis was 'stealing' from black artists or whatnot. NOBODY was doing what he did, not Carl Perkins, not Howling Wolf, NOBODY. He was a truly unique individual, his music was unique, and nothing was the same after him.

The Beatles were HUGE and always at the forefront of changing musical tastes, but there were other bands doing more or less the same thing, just not doing it as well. Same with Nirvana. It's conceivable that music would have developed roughly as it has without either of them. Without Elvis, we'd all be listening to Perry Como clones right now. Or Mozart.

Now that at least would be a decent debate although I'd argue he hadn't on a worldwide level. Certainly outside of the US (esp. the UK) the influence of Elvis was for the most part nowhere near as big as the beatles. Probably a different mnatter inside of the US though.

However, we're talking about a short lived grunge band here which is a totally different kettle of fish

If you ever get a chance to look at a very young Elvis's performances from the Louisiana Hayride days, they're STILL powerful even to modern eyes. The man was just fucking electric.

because music history is not subjective. It has real starts and stops. If you asked us who we liked to listen to more then that is subjective and hence there is no right answer. That wasn't what was asked. The question was which one had a stronger impact.

For the zillionth time - without the Beatles there wouldn't have been Nirvana. Hence, no matter how powerful you think Nirvana have been they couldn't have been that powerful without The Beatles HENCE the Beatles's impact is strengthened and further proved by whatever impact you think Nirvana had.

I think the best thing Nirvana did was to lift us out of that god-awful corporate Reagan Huey Lewis and the News era.

From what I understand though, there were a LOT of bands in the grunge scene - the Meatpuppets and plenty others. Nirvana was the one who came out of it big and brought it to the rest of the US.

And god knows we needed them badly in Indiana.

Not really. I'd say it's open to debate. Indirect influence does not mean quite the same as overall global influence, otherwise you can take it all the way back to Bert the caveman banging rocks.

Genuinely haven't got that much time or interest though to debate that one because it really is possible to do so unlike the original topic

For those of you who mentioned that Kurt Cobain;s influences contained the Beatles, where are you getting your info?

From what I can find / read, he mentions that he loved them as a kid and his mom would often buy him their records to keep some 'british' in him.

He never mentioned them as an influence, though. His influences were many, but the most mentioned seem to be:

                                            the Melvins
                                            Vaselines
                                            Devo
                                            the Raincoats
                                            the Meat Puppets

Liking / loving a band doesn't automatically mean they were a musical influence. If I were a hardcore metal band not incorporating anything experimental or progressive in my sound, but liked to listen to Cyndi Lauper, it doesn't really mean she's an influence.....atleast not to much extent.

Yeah Elvis had large influence. Without him and rock n roll there would be no British Invasion so Beatles vs Elvis would be debatable.

Beatles vs Nirvana is invalid. Nirvana had zero impact aside from being at the forefront of a marketing trend that lasted briefly. They made great music though. Their impact if any was inspiring thousands of crappier versions of themselves.

Cobain sounds like he was influenced by the Pixies more than anything else. The singing and playing are very similar. I read that he used to listen to Sabbath quite a bit. Put that together with the blues of Ledbetter which they did a cover song for, and you've got Nirvana. Nirvana was not directly influenced by the Beatles, but yes indirectly I suppose.

Well I knew someone would have to drag Elvis into this thread. I didn't want to be the one to do it, as of course Elvis is the top rock legend of all time, always will be. I was trying to deal with the question at hand (nirvana vs Beatles), not pile more rocks on what to me was an obvious non-issue anyway.

I can agree with that one, his sound is said to be a combo of what Pixies/soundgarten/jane's addiction were doing at the time....he just got more popular.

Anyhow, what I asked there was for those who said he was influenced by the beatles, where did they get this? ie. give me a link, name a source, anything......that way I can go chekc it out :>

I haven't read much on Nirvana- but I did read the Come As You Are book and think it's quite good even for someone who isn't a big fan, like myself. One of the things that stuck with me was how much cobain stated that the Pixies "surfer Rosa" was his largest influence. I also enjoy that album immensly.

                                                              Some quotes I dug up:

"During an interview in 1992, Kurt Cobain told Spin magazine that when he wrote "Smells Like Teen Spirit" he was trying to make it sound like a Pixies song."

"In a January 1994 interview with Rolling Stone, Cobain admitted that Nirvana?s ?Smells Like Teen Spirit? was his attempt to ape one of his favourite bands. ?I was trying to write the ultimate pop song,? he said. ?I was basically trying to rip off the Pixies. I have to admit it.?

So if the Pixies spawned Nirvana- wouldn't that make the Pixies the most influential band of all time? J/K

No people won't. Why would you ask a question only to argue with the answers you are getting? You obviously do not like the answers but deal with it.

Both genre's of music will always remember these two bands. 20 years from now people will still be talking about the Beatles, they changed the way everyone thought about music the "world" if you will. Nirvana on the other hand came around when the hair bands were dying out, when people were sick of listening to the fucking Cinderellas and Warrants. For arguements sake I say Guns N Roses had a bigger impact then Nirvana did. They saved us from the Hair pop Poison bands, Nirvana came when they were done.

From Nirvana we got, Sound Garden, Pearl Jam, Alice n Chains et al., People will still remember the Beatles in 20 years, I am not so sure that there will be as many people remembering Nirvana. They had a good run, but then Kurt decided to do his own dental work with a shotgun, who's to say what impact they could have had? Nobody, because it was just an era of music just like era's past.

Your question was not about the age of the bands or what time warp we are in, it was about impact on the music industry. Both had a large impact - but it's apples and oranges.
