The situation in Africa is dreadful and not all the blame can be placed on the outside. What we should remember is that a lot can change in a short period of time. Look at the changes made in the world in the past 200 years. More improvements and innovations have been made in the past 200 years alone than all of human history. Things can and will change even when it seems impossible or when it seems like things haven't changed in ages. The situation in Africa, while dire, can most certainly change. We most likely won't be around to see it though.

Davidd made a good point about introspection. That's very much needed.
