Any Dog Trainers here...I NEED YOUR HELP???

I have a long hair dachshund, I have had him for about 3 years. One of the smartest dogs I have ever had, He loves to take baths, he rolls, sits up, bang bang and he goes down. Never needs a leash, ask him where is toy is and he'll find the closest one and bring it to you. Time to sleep tell him to go the bed and he knocks out. Just about any trick in the book, and he does it. Awesome.

But the little fucker can't learn not to pee or shit in the house. I tried rubbing his nose in it, give him a little ass spanking, throw him outside with his shit.

I don't understand, he goes outside in the morning, he goes when everytime I take him out. BUT WHY THE FUCK does he still do it in the house.

The bastard will do Backflips if I ask him to, but I can't keep him from taking Dumps in the house.

    Any Pros in the House???

I posted n the other one about what to do, but he is so damn cute!!!!
SIG TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60. Let me repeat... A 120 x 60 button and no more that 3 lines of DEFAULT SIZE AND COLOR text.

I have a dachshund also every morning we would put him outside so he could do his thing and he just always did it outside after that. Every once in a while he will fuck up but not often enough to get upset about it.

Make him sit everytime before you take him out soon he will sit by the door when he needs to go. Also until he's used to it your going to have to take him out every hour and make him sit before every time or he'll keep going in the house and you'll get annoyed... i know my new puppy doesn't seem to get it. I do see her sitting by the door sometimes now and know shes needs to go out it just takes time.

        Good Luck!

Try keeping him in a smaller area for a week or so, not too small, but small enough whereas if he goes while you are gone, he has to sleep beside it.

          Just at thought.

He might be past that, you do that too them young.

I think a small area might suffice however.

I was lucky. The dachshund we had growing up would scratch on the door once and look for someone to open it. He'd go out and if you left the door pushed just to..he'd open it when he was done and come inside.

The smaller the dog the harder they can be to housetrain. Often there is just too large an area that they are allowed to roam in. They don't see it as being all their 'den'. That's why crate training as a pup can be helpful. I've heard of crate training older dogs, but it can be difficult.

I'd try not allowing him the roam of the house unless you are nearby. When you are gone, outside or not to where you can keep an eye on him, put him in a confined area. Perhaps a kitchen where you can gate off the doorway or a bathroom where you could do the same. I wouldn't recommend putting him in a bathroom and closing the door but instead gate it so he still can hear what's going on, etc.

I have a 16 month old shih tzu, Chloe, who still has an accident here and there. If it's just me in the house she's either confined to the room I am in or she's in a 4' x 6' pen within my view that has linoleum for flooring. I've used this pen since she was 3 months old. One good thing that has come out of it, if she does have an accident in my house, it's never been on my carpet...always on a solid surface and usually by the door.

Some great pointers here, except for the Bat
I do leave him in the kitchen, my old house he had the whole house to himself all day, now he is in the kitchen but still can't hold it in.

Do you leave water out for them all night, or do you guys take the water away.

Hope you guys are around when I have kids

Chloe gets no water after 9pm unless we've been roughhousing around or something. She goes out just before bed and sleeps on the bed with me. She'll go 6 or 8 hours sometimes at night without going out again.

Always leave ater out for him

If he shits in the house, remove the shit, and then put his food bowl right on top of where he did it. Normal doga will not shit where they eat.

Also, walk him more often. Make sure that he goes each time you take him out, and keep a close eye on him. Make him lay next to you while you are working. Bring a pillow in the office for him, so that he feels like he is part of the act.

If he leaves the room, follow him. If you catch him doing his business in the house, you can stop him a lot faster, then spanking him after the fact.

lots of praise when they go outside, and lots of scolding when they go inside. Take him out often and when he goes make a big happy production. Do the opposite when he goes inside. The dog wants to make you happy, shouldnt take him long to catch on.

That is correct sir. First day my pup was in the house I took him outside, whipped out the Johnson and took a wizz where I wanted him to go. 30 seconds later he did it in the same spot, and has been ever since.

The most successful way I've done is crate training, and no dog is too old to learn to use a crate.

Get a kennel that is big enough for your dog to turn around in, but not much more. He will do anything to avoid pooping in such a small space.

Make sure he's in the crate all night. When he whines to get out, open the door, pick him up in your arms immediately, and take him outside.

Put him on the ground and make a big positive deal out of things if he poops or pees outside.

Then, when you go inside, let him stay out for awhile, but keep a close eye on him. If he looks like he's going to go, or starts to go inside, pick him up immediately and say "NO... " in your best low deep bad voice... and take him outside. Make a big deal out of how great he's doing if he does anything outside like he should.

It takes a LOT of patience. You're going to have to watch him like a hawk. When he isn't crated, he's going to find somewhere to go eventually.

If you keep at it, and you are CONSISTANT, he will learn. You have to be consistant.

The key to training dogs is catching them in the act. It doesn't do you any good to yell at them after they've pooped somewhere and been running around for awhile. They don't know what you're mad about. Only get mad and say "NO" if you actually catch him in the middle of taking a dump.

But what if he barks all night for being in a crate, he is used to a big house and no put him in a crate, don't you think its tool late.

Sounds good though. I just think I may of spoiled him already.

exactly, if you find it after it happens and you yell at the dog or spank it they wont know what the hell you're talking about.

                                                      Hey Dave,

Cute Dog! I have 4 dogs and took so many dog training classes so I might be of some help.

First off you should of crate trained your dog from the beginning this teaches your dog to told it and not eliminate in their sleeping areas and inside the house. I would still recommend trying this. If your dog whines alot like ours, you should ignore him. I actualy had to put the crate in the closet but he seemed to like it in there and now he is completly trained and doesn't even need his crate.
He was very whiny at first but he got used to his place and likes it now. The crate should be just big enough for him to turn around ok and that is it and no food or water in the crate. You can put some toys and a blanket in there.

Then when you wake up let him out get really excited and say wanna go pottie, take your dog outside with treats wait for him to go the bathroom and prasie him "good potty" and give him some treats. When you say "good potty" be excited.

If you dog goes inside clean up the poop and take it into the yard where he is supossed to go and leave it there. This will help him realise that he should go into the yard. If he goes anymore praise him and and give him more treats. You can also buy a anti-potty spray and spray it where ever he messes, otherwise it will smell and he will think it is ok to go there. I have heard several different good and bad things about rubbing their nose in it. I have heard it may make them ashamed of it and then they will try to go inside and hide before going so be careful with doing that.
You also need to watch him alot and catch him going in your house as much as possible. They say you have to catch him within 3 seconds or the dog will not know what he did wrong. So if you don't catch him quick there is no sense punishing him but you should still take any poop outside into the yard. When you catch him tell him no but try not to yell, just take him, his poop and treats into the yard. It is useless to spank him. If he pee's clean it up right away and also take him in the yard.

I hope that helps, good luck.

                                                          Answer is here: crate train!

that is it. If you don't do it you will never ever get your dog to stop shitting in your house.

3 years old? might be too late but you could give it a try.

Dave, your dog probably will whine and bark when you first start crate training him. This is the hardest part.. you have to ignore him, otherwise he'll learn that whining gets him out of the crate.

After awhile, he'll cry less and less and then not at all.

Small dogs are the worst with this, ESPECIALLY if they are alone. Small dogs are more social than big dogs and like other small dogs to play with because they like constant stimulation.

REally you have to get them on a schedule, their little systems go through food and water faster than large animals and they do not seem to be able to or want to hold it like the larger animals. I would not say your dog is not doing it on purpose to get attention or to punish you for it being bored or lonely, honestly the weiner dogs and chihuahua are devious like that. Get a feel for how long after he/she eats and drinks till they have to go and make sure you disctate when and where they get food and water so you can bring your dog out when they have to go.

Basically what I did on the advice of a dog trainer was the following:

I would take them outside at night, and say "Go Bathroom". Over and over and over until they did, and not letting them inside until they did. Took an hour once.
Sometimes they would just sit there and look at me. But they always eventually went.

When they did, I would just overdose them with praise. Sounded like a fool, going 'goooooooood DOG!' at midnight in my backyard.

Three years later, they actually understand the words. I open the sliding door, say 'Go Bathroom' and they head outside and go.

                                                                    Comment

First off, rubbing the dogs nose in shit isn't going to help. Infact it's considered rather nasty now, so you might want to stop...

Disciplining when they've screwed up is still important, but especially with a little dog like that, I'd just use drama... Throw a terrifying fit immediately, adn then ignore (don't even look at) the dog for 20 minutes or so.

I have my dog trained to pee on command. It's simply a matter of assigning a command to the action when it's already being performed. This means that dog now associates that command with outdoors, and can be praised for peeing outside as well as following a command.

Keep the dog on a very strict walk schedule so that it can learn to pee on schedule. A great way to start this is to take the dog out to pee (including the pee command) once every hour for a few days. Except at night, obviously.. were you may benefit from crating (but crating a 3 year old IS likely to be noisey) Make a note of which hours the dog actually pees or shits... or does it the most. You can then pare down the walk schedule to around those times.

Perhaps you want to hire someone for all this! LOL..

I have a pure bread Siberian Huskey that just turned 10. I house trained her back then at my old, old place 3 homes ago.

The only way that worked was crate training. Basicaly the dog was with me 24/7 and when she couldn't be I would lock her in her crate. When I would let her out I'd bring her straight to her potty part of the yard. She'd poop and I'd praise her and give her a treat.

Now here's the interesting part.... after many months of this I got to the point where I could let her out of her crate and say "go to the bathroom" and she would run over to her area and go. So I knew she understood. But the problem was that when I left her alone she would still go in the wrong spot. It was very aggrivating because Siberian Huskeys are super intelligent yet super super stuborn as well.

I could basically just look at her and say "go to the bathroom" and she would run out and go to her area. She's super smart like that. Plus I did a great job with praise & treats. But she wasn't completely full proof trained yet...

So this one time when I let her out of her crate she didn't go to the bathroom....but 10 minutes later when I wasn't looking she went in the wrong spot... Now after months of crate training and knowing damn well the dog understood where to go, I was super super pissed seeing her crap in the wrong spot again. It was a nice house with a pool so I didn't like poop right next to it. So now I'm pissed, I pick her up by her neck, scream at the top of my lungs at her, walk over to her crap area and toss her into it (it was a giant dirt patch so she wasn't hurt)....but it was a few feet I through her. She had a HUGE area that I cleared off just for her to crap in...so she basically had a giant part of the yard just for that.

Well that did it and must of scared the crap out of her cause she never pooped in the wrong spot again. From then on I could leave her alone in the yard or house and she would only go in her "batheroom area".

Now before anyone goes off on me... It was a soft dirt area I threw her on, she didn't get hurt and I did feel bad... but it worked.

That's my story on how I originaly trained my dog...not saying it's the perfect way or the way others should do it, just that's how I did it.

That's the way to do it. The only way. We are going through the exact same thing as you, Dave.

Also, you can teach your dog not to whine in it's kennel. Both ours are trained to be quiet on command. We trained them to be.

If you have carpet, go to a pet store and get a blacklight. Turn the lights off at night, and shine it over your carpet. Be prepared to be shocked.
