I have lived in the Netherlands before and traveled all over Europe. What I like about Eurpoe are the people. Europeans in general are highly educated and much more aware of the world than my fellow Americans (including me).
What I love about the USA is how business is conducted in almost every facet of live.
I know this sounds trivial but is just a small example of what I am talking about: In any city in the USA I can walk into a restaurant and order food exactly the way I want it. If there is a problem with the food they will either make you something new or just take the charge off of your bill. Often they will make you a new meal and also give it to you for free. Try complaining about a product or service in any other country and you get an attitude.
NEVER complain about your food in Europe. They will likely just kick you out.
Also, the USA is one of the few countries left that has real freedom of speech. You can go to prison in many European countries for saying the wrong thing. That is truly fucked up.Comment

You can? I think some dude went into jail for blashphemy in the 60's or something.. but I haven't heard anything like that.Originally posted by Gynecologist

I was born and raised in the U.S but I've been visiting Italy/Sicily since I was a kid. Most recently I've been to Amsterdam. But that's it as far as traveling outside the U.S. I still haven't even been to Mexico or Canada yet.
So what makes the U.S better than elsewhere? Well we have tons of problems of our own and I don't think anyone is "better" than anyone else....we'are all equals.
But we are the wealthiest country in the world with the highest standard of living. If you're wondering how YOU'D be better of in America then the only thing guaranteed would be a materialistic higher standard of living. You will live in a bigger house/apartment, drive bigger cars, work less and still have more than anywhere else in the world.
Here's a perfect example of U.S "standard of living" thing. When I visit Italy I always have to be carefull when I take a shower because hot water runs out easier. Since the homes are smaller so are the water heaters.
There's probably a zillion "standard of living" things that make living in the U.S. just easier and more comfortable than anywhere else..... but that doesn't make us or anyone else better. Also this doesn't mean the standards of living suck in Europe either.Comment

I don't have a water heater. I get as much warm water as I want. I also can go to the shop and buy almost everything you guys have there. Your taxing isn't all that much smaller than ours and we do have free healthcare.Originally posted by Meloman

Standard of living is better? I wouldn't say that, property prices seem to be about the same there and in europe.
Gas is cheaper there as well as cars, true.. but that's not really what improves quality of life. You just can buy a faster car, which is nice and all.. but not a reason to move there.
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying usa is a bad place to live by any standards. But there's a flock of guys on GFY who seem to think everything in the usa is better than elsewhere, I've yet to see any of those things mentioned here.
..and I'm off.Comment

I don't gloat and I don't like gloaters. The superiority complex thing is nationalism and I think nationalism is dick waving BS. I get defensive when people start ignorantly bashing America, but I don't think that's gloating.Originally posted by TeenGodFather
Now, why is usa so much better than anyone else? Why do you gloat 24/7/365?
Can someone tell me why I would be better off on a personal level living in the usa compared to say, france, spain or finland?
Bash away, but I'm seriously intrested if any of you have valid answers.
I do think that the US presents better opportunity for personal and financial success then any other country in the world.Alt Journals, Blogs for Perverts!

Exactly. Materialistic things won't exactly make you happier or make living in the U.S better. And I personally love Europe and European culture (marticularly Italian since that's what I am). So I'm not a Europe hater or anything.Originally posted by TeenGodFather

But I still think that overal the standards of living are higher in the U.S. You mentioned yourself that you don't have a water heater. While health care is expensive here and does suck in that regard, overal I'd be willing to bet that our hospitals and doctors are still a notch above elsewhere. The U.S. wealth overal creates an infrastructure that just creates an overal higher standard of living as far as day to day living goes.
Gas is cheapter here so that makes a big difference in your bank account. The money saved is then spent on other luxuries. We have bigger cars that are driven on bigger roads that have call boxes every 1 mile in case of emergency. Shopping malls have big old parking lots and then you drive home and pull into your garage and unload.
I'm sure if I google "U.S standard of living" it'll show tons of examples. I'm sure the list can go on forever.
But does driving a bigger car on a bigger road with cheaper gas truly make our "standard of living" higher/better?Comment

Here's an interesting read on "U.S. Standard of Living"

Looks like the US standard of living isn't quite as high as I thought...but still up there.Comment

I agree although I can't say for certain because I haven't lived elsewhere. But the US economy is a machine unlike any other. I've been told that Europeans get longer vacations each year (1-2 months) and that their work days are a lot shorter (time for naps, only working half a day instead of 9-5 or more which is standard in the US).Originally posted by CET

America is business driven 24/7 so it's good if you're motivated and it presents opportunities. I think if you want a more laid back lifestyle perhaps Europe is better in that regard. You could argue that the standard of life is better in Europe if you prefer the latter.Comment

And for the standard of living thing, Japan and the nordic countries always come out on top on every study done on it, so saying America definitely has the best standard of living is wrong.Comment

People are not arrogant. There are no fat ass women. Nobody looks down on you. Everyone is the same. Flashy people with money are looked upon with suspision. The food is great. The people are happy, though they aint got nothin.
I could happily live here the rest of my life. This is Russia. Just ask any real Russian, and he wouldnt live anywhere else. I live in Moscow.Comment

It's worth considering that statistically you are about 400% more likely to be murdered in America vs. countries like Switzerland, Denmark, Norway, Ireland, Germany, Spain, Italy, United Kingdom, France, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, etcComment

Ok,
What's up with answers like
"so stay where you are???"
"really . . . . I don't recall anyone inviting anyone to come live here. . . you would hate it . . . everyone is armed, and we shoot first and ask questions later"
etc..
Trying to be witty looks to me like you just don't have the answer.
... who's saying I'm coming there. So far nobody has come up with a reason why I should.. which was the point of the thread. Now, trying to bash other places for no reason isn't the point of this thread. I am trying to see if all of you people who are SO proud of your land have any justification for it. I don't have one for finland being superior, and I don't think it is, so I don't feel the fucking urge to bash other places.
You obviously think you are superior, so I'd just like to know why.
Again, alienQ and other arrogant idiots wearing glasses with american flags over them, I'm not bashing your country. I want to know why YOU think it's better...and I'm off.Comment

i assume you mean that we shouldn't ask the 70,000,000 Russians that immigrated to other countries in the last 10 years?

Freedom and choice of options. Wanna live in a bustling metropolis? We've got those. Are you a recluse and wanna isolate yourself from society? Cut your ties with the rest of the world and go live in the woods, desert, or be a mountain man/hillbilly. Are you one of those snobby, cheese eating, wine drinking, better than everybody else artists? Live in San Francisco or Berkeley. Like cold weather? Live on the frozen tundra of Alaska. Do you prefer tropical weather? Move to Hawaii. Wanna pretend to be a cowboy? Move to Montana, New Mexico, Texas, etc. Are you a lazy and shiftless? No problem. We've even got a few european like ultra liberal socialist utopias where the local and state governments will take care of you at the expense of the working man. Wanna be a farmer? Go to the midwest. Like the beach? We've got more than our fair share of those. Do you like all of the above? Bundle your clothes up in one of those handkerchief things and tie it to the end of a stick and hit the road as a traveling hobo.
Hell, I don't know. Maybe there are other countries that have all of the options the US has, and the freedom to take advantage of them, but I bet there aren't very many.Last edited by jas1552; 09-13-2004, 07:48 AM.Comment
