Where were you, what were you doing 3 years ago when you first heard the news that planes were being flown into the World Trade Center? I was on a break between classes, then I went to Applebee's and watched the whole thing on the news.

I slept till 11:00 am west coast time that morning. When I woke up I had a few voice messages, people were saying "holy shit we are under attack" etc, so I turn on CNN and see video of the first tower collapsing (wihout knowing it was a plane that did it)
I thought NYC had been nuked or something, then after a few minutes I realized what was going on. Kinda freaked me out...Comment

I fell asleep with Fox News on, which happens a lot. When I opened my eyes in the morning I saw the Tower on fire. I sat up and watched for a bit and then bam, the second tower was hit. I was shocked. I could understand what was going on because it was just so far from anything I could imagine. Then I saw the pentagon and they said we were under attack. I remember looking out the window and thinking holy shit, this can't be happening. Who the hell is dumb enough to rattle our cage?
Should I go to the store and buy some water and canned goods? Should I get my neighbors together and start planning something? I didn't know what to plan, but I felt I had to do something because I had no idea what was next. It was the most vulnerable feeling I have ever felt.
I also remember the feeling of all planes being grounded and thinking wow I am stuck here. I cannot get in a plane and go anywhere. (I traveled a lot back then) I don't know about you but it was a very eerie feeling.
It felt good to hear the President was in New York and to hear him talking. I know everyone here doesn't like him, but whether you like him or not, him going to New York made the country feel a lot safer. We knew someone was there for us. We knew we had each other!!!~ loryn@loryntaylor . com ~

It came on the news. and people thought it was a joke at first
until I screamed holy fucking shit thats real.
Then they made an anncouncement over the intercoms we went back to our main campus
then they had us evacuate into the parking lot like someone had called in a bomb threat..

I was about to roll a cigarette, then turned on the tv to see a grinning christian fundamentalits terrorist with the jaggedy words and a picture of a burning building "Terrorism Strikes America!"
Then 2 minutes of grinning and the word 'apparent' being repeated over and over before I turned it off and was pissed that my attention was directed on the towers, and also pissed that rolling my cigarette and conscoiusly deciding not to pay attention was the cause of the firefighters to not realize at that moment that it was in fact bullshit. I was in my frat house sound asleep. Being in a frat house I slept with the air conditioner on and the door bolted shut (too keep down the noise, and too keep out unwanted guests). One of my friends was banging on the door all morning and I finally opened it at 10:30. My friend who was all into ROTC (military training) and very "battle ready" when it came to war... He came in yelling that we have just been attacked. As I turned on the TV, they were repeating the second tower falling. It was so surreal. I remember thinking, i must be dreaming. Then they showed the pentagon, and the other plane that crashed in penn. Being a senior in college I had a lot of friends who graduated and were workin in the city. I remember we all sat around that day waiting to hear from everyone. We got all the phone calls except for one. One of my friends brother was killed. He made it out of Tower 1, then went back in to help people get out the building. They found his remains in the stairwell. 1 year later his wallet was found and returned to his parents. Very sad. God bless everyone who was touched that day.Comment

I was still working at McDonald's back then. My restaurant had given away a $1 million cash prize on Labour Day and we were holding a big party/ceremony with media, McD's bigshots, Ronald McDonald, the winner, etc.
I got to work that morning and it was business as usual. I asked my co-workers where all the news crews were and they told me "In NYC". I asked why and they told me a plane had flown into one of the Twin Towers and then when everyone was watching, a plane flew into the other one.
At first I thought it was a fucked up coincidence and then I realized something like that had to be intentional. I still had about 20 mins before my shift started so I went downstairs and put it on CNN.
I remember trying to call my girlfriend, Brat, and I couldn't reach her. She works in one of the tallest buildings in Montreal that contains the Israeli Consulate. I called her mom who told me the building had been evacuated and I was super worried til I got in touch with her.

I was managing a convenience store (webmastering part time)
A customer came in the store and said terrorists had hit NYC and that Dubya better open up a can of whoop ass (remember I'm in Louisiana)
I went out to my car and turned on AM radio to hear what was going on.
After I got the scoop I went back into the store and told my buddy (who was also an employee) what happened.
Being the cynical bastard that I am I also told him "this is rally around the leader time....Bush's approval ratings will go into the 90's"
And boy was I right....then he used that popularity to ram through all of his tax cuts and faith based initiatives and shit like that....not to mention starting a war under false pretenses, all because nobody wanted to seem "unpatriotic" by opposing the president at a time like that.

Driving back from a weekend bootycall trip to see an ex boyfriend in Maryland. Believe it or not, I lived in a building directly across the river from the WTC at the time (in Jersey). I had tuned in the radio to listen to the primary coverage. (Yeah, I'm a dork). I kept hearing about it, and calling parents/friends in NYC... but didn't actually get off the the road and see it on TV till 2pm or so.
Very strange, getting it on the radio. Scary. Flipping around from WABC to NPR. Any other people who found out while in the car?Comment

woke up in the morning, took a shower, all that .. then in the elevator on my way out to the office my doorman tells me a plane hit wtc , so i go up to the roof of my 15 story building (brooklyn ny, brighton beach area) , and see the smoke coming out of the tower, it was pretty far away so i couldn't make out any details and thought it was a small single engine plane ... then got outside to walk to my buds place a few blocks away and all the people i pass by are talking about what happened which seemed kinda creepy ... so i get to his place in a few min just in time to witness the second jet hit the tower on live tv...Comment

In my bed, in Scottsdale, asleep. When my TV turned on to wake me up, I looked up and saw the plane going into the second tower. For some reason I thought the channel setting was wrong ang that it was a movie. So I turned to other news and saw the same thing. I still thought it was odd that there was the same movie playing on two stations, never mind they were the news stations at this point. I'm not a good morning person.
Then when I finally was jolted awake by the realization that it was real, I jumped out of bed, and told my son he wasn't going to school yet and then called the school and told them that. They were kind of suprised at that point since they were all driving to school when it started.

I was on a miltary base teaching a security awareness class to a group of about 20 government & military clients (I was told the base was listed by the GAO as being in the top 5 military terrorist targets). After the planes crashed into the WTC and Pentagon, there was a general feeling we might be next. That base went from quiet and sleepy to Threatcon Delta very quickly and all the big guns were whipped out.
We were booted from the base, but we were staying at the VOQ, (Visiting Officers Quarters) and had a very tense week as they made that the command post for that part of the base. It took a little while getting used to having a Hummer with a .50 parked out front and security people armed head to toe, with the safeties off.
I remember calling my mother about 11:00am and telling her that I was alright, and she hadn't woken up until after the planes hit. She seriously thought I wrapped the rental car around a tree, when I had to break her the bad news.
The one really odd thing I remember (in a day of very odd and troubling things) was sitting down the night of the 11th in the rec room of the VOQ at night watching "Groundhog Day" on TBS with one of the guards. Thinking how surreal of a movie that was after the days event, and hoping, praying that today was just a really bad cosmic dream, that I will go to bed, in the morning the alarm will start playing 'I got you babe' and the 11th would play out again without America under attack.

At this time I lived in Michigan my grandmother who raised me was starting to get ill so I was staying with her. I was sleeping on the floor and the night before I feel asleep watching t.v...Woke up right when the first plane hit and looked at the t.v and thought Armegedeon or something was on t.v....Then I got grasp what was going on...I will remember it for the loss of life and one of the last moments that seemed surreal that my grandmother and I shared toghther...Trust no one there all snakesComment
