The real answer to this is pretty much documented as historical fact - Israelites had their gods with El at their leader of gods, and the Judeans, with their one god Yahweh - and around the 8th century BC they had to pick one in order to prevent conflict since they were living among each other as races - so the refugee camps in Jerusalum spawned leaders that documented their decision of Yahweh - and about that time is when the old testament was basically formed - albeit with many discrepancies of stories - scientists and archeologists have proven most of the stories as myths from hard physical evidence but those original stories (about 40 of them) became the original bible and created the "one god".
It was revised again in the 600-700s BC by the Deuteronomist writers who were setting up visions of that one god sitting in the temple of Jerusalem - and the real king on the throne in those days played a little of peoples fears - sending "messangers from god" with warnings - and when the Jews disregarded them he sent his armies in to teach them a lesson - which led to great biblical stories but they were all BS to hold a population in control at the time (hmmm - sound familiar?)
Soooo - the final answer would be that each population center of the world back then created a "god or set of gods" to explain away things like eclipses and famine etc - and eventually formed them all into one god which is still used to host fear in billions of human lives - what a shame we cant progress any further
