Both are great.Originally posted by pimplink
Who's the better guitarist?
The more mpgs of Hendrix I d/l off the Net, the more my respect for him grows. Classic!
Different period
Different styles
Both really left their marks !
Anyways, you can't rate any of these guys.
They are all equal. Don't worry, when Van Halen dies, he'll be respected as a god too (it's always the same)
The thing about Hendrix is he was sooooooooooooooo stoned during his live performances hat it sucked a bit
While some nights Van Halen was soooooo drunkComment

My thoughts I always thought Jimi was overrated. Now Eddie Van Halen created a new approach to playing electric guitar. The sad thing about Eddie is he hasnt evolved as a player like say Eric Clapton has. The best guitarist during Jimi's time the guy who did it first was Jeff Beck.Comment

Thats a retarded question..Jimi , Hands Down
Give Jimi todays equipment and he would be without a doubt something that would be out of this world ( not that he isnt already)DICK TOO BIG! Maximum 120x60 button and no more than 3 text lines of DEFAULT SIZE and COLOR.
Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, you may use a 624x80 instead of a 120x60.
Let me repeat... A 120 x 60 button and no more that 3 lines of DEFAULT SIZE AND COLOR text.Comment

I think you have it the other way around. Jimi didn't do tricks with the guitar. Guitar tricks was a thing of the 80's. I think you're mistaking Jimi's whacked out performances where he lights his guitar on fire with the actual guitar playing.Originally posted by Praguer
Is a good gutarrist judged by the number and coolness of the tricks he can perform on a guitar? If yes, then absolutely Hendrix or Halen are no doubt the best.
If a good gutarrist means being able to express emotions and touch people in a way no words can do. Then my vote goes for:
Eric Clapton, Carlos Santana, Joe Satriani.
People have been harsh on Halen in this thread. He may not have been Hendrix but he is a phenonemol player and offers more than just tricks too. Even if the only peice of Halen guitar playing one ever hears is his solo on Michael Jackson's "Beat It" you can hear that the guy was onto something special, that he has a deeper understanding the guitar than most. By birth Halen could not be Hendrix because he came around 20 years after Hendrix. It's like trying to re-invent the wheel, it can't be done, but amazing modifications can be made on the wheel.
Clapton and Hendrix are on the same plain coming from the same era and inspired by blues there playing is stuff that can never be duplicated. I didn't quite understand all this until I picked up a guitar on my own. After I did that, I realized the true genius of these guys.Comment

To get back to the original question of this thread. First off, I think for his time Jimi was a better guitar player, but like all things the art has grown and with each new gen of guitarist the old is built in and new ground is created. No one can ever take away the new ground Eddie covered. Sure finger taps are easy, but he totally revolutionized the technique and introduced it to the mainstream as a real altrenative to simply picking a string with a pick or finger. I also think Eddie was more classically trained, which doesn't mean he's a better musician, but only that Eddie did have a better overall understanding of the instrument from a purely academic standpoint. But fuck academics. We're talking revolutionary music when we talk about Hendrix, music that moves the spirit and evocs emotion. Personally I tend to think an untrained musician who can play from the heart is much better to listen to on an emotional level the anyone who trains and studies music. Training robs you of original creativity imho and i've never enjoyed listening to trained studio musicians jam.Last edited by Priapus; 09-10-2004, 11:19 AM.Comment

Stupidest comment ever. Training opens up creative doors, it doesn't close them. Technically, Eddie is clearly better than Jimi although some may prefer Jimi for innovation and pure emotion. Not that Eddie doesn't have a hell of a lot of innovation in his own right. Anyone who thinks Kirk Hammett is even in the running here has no idea what they're talking about. He had some good leads in the beginning of Metallica's career, but their strength has always rested on Hetfield's songwriting and riffs. Hammett is sloppy as hell live, uses the pentatonic scale like it's going out of style (especially most recently), and appears to have a wah pedal surgically grafted to his foot. Any argument on his behalf is purely delusional. Although discussions on guitarists on this board bring out the amateur musicians much like discussions on politics bring out the amateur politicians so it doesn't surprise me. Btw, John Petrucci and Steve Vai beat any of the guitarists mentioned anyway.Originally posted by Priapus

Wow all you guitar wankers need to shut the fuck up.
1. Jimi playd with a million times more soul and is therefore infinitely better than some fucking lycra suit wanker.
2. Hair metal is a skid mark on the underwear of musical history. All hair metal. From metallica to van halen, to bon jovi. All the same. None of them can write a meaningful song.
3. For innovative, expressive, original guitar playing. Check for Joey Santiago of the Pixies. Angular, Emotive, Demented, ridiculously addictive guitar with heavy surf rock influences.
4. See number 2.
5. For emphasis, see number 4.NYCComment

Jimi put on a good show, but his writing skills were unimpressive compared to Page, Townsend, et al. Much of the Hendrix worship comes from the fact that he died in his prime. Needless to say, if he were just another fat, balding, washed-up 60's rock hero, he wouldn't have such an iconic status. Overall, I'd put him slightly behind Eddie, even though he was more entertaining live.Comment

Finally some voices of reason come through.

If you don't think metallica have any meaningful songs then you are a fucking retard and I'd like to hear what you think meaning full is. Perhaps you aren't bright enough to understand the metaphors and language to understand their meaning. Find some site with song explanaions. You will be suprised. Their new album is shit but they have some quality songs. You obviously don't have a clue about music.2. Hair metal is a skid mark on the underwear of musical history. All hair metal. Jimi is awesome, I don't really like van halens style that much, or satriani. Steve Via is cool. Slash, Hammett and Jimi are my biggest influences. It's what youy play, it's how it sounds. Although there are more advanced guitarists out there, its the feel they have that I love so much. Every one has their own opinion.Comment

What pissed me off reading this thread are the people who think eddie van halen was better than jimi henrix. eddie van halen wasn't better than anybody. he was just a hair metal wanker hick who slept with his guitar. That might've made him a good guitarist, but it certainly didn't make him a good musician.
And the same can be said for the entire genre of hair metal. Hair metal amazes me because when compared to any bad period of music before or after it, in all of music history, it will always come out as the worst. Try me on this.
I figured that Metallica has a huge fucking catalogue and I honestly enjoy about 6 of their songs out of that catalogue, and that pretty much qualifies them as being insignificant enough to be lumped in with the rest of the hopelessly tragic genre of hair metal.

stoned guitar playing vs. drunk guitar playing??
If we go that route, then we'd have to ask....
what sounds better...
guitar playing on POT vs. on Ecstacy vs. on LSD (Hendrix sounded great on it!)

Any examples of NON Hair metal groups?
Nirvana comes to mind....
So does the lesser known but influential punk band The Kids and Flipper.
