You can't really say one artist is "better" than another (unless you're comparing, say, Michelangelo and Thomas Kinkade). A lot of it is subjective taste.

I would guess that if you gave Eddie Van Halen the assignment of playing a Jimi Hendrix piece note-for-note he could do it while Jimi probably could not have played "Eruption"

My favorite guitarist is Rick Nielsen of Cheap Trick, who did not make it into the top 100 on Rolling Stone's list. But that list was insane, with Eddie Van Halen down at 70.

Take a good listen at 1984.

"Hot For Teacher" opens up with one incredible piece of sound that demonstrates the dynamic of Eddie Van Halen taste with sound.

Another guy that is totally underated with the guitar is Prince.
But if ya wanna talk about a guy that cleans them all up take a look at Kirt Hammet.
Kirk "penta - wah" Hammet... that's funny.

Steve Vai cleans them all up, have you ever seen him live?

Nirvana had nothing they were pure trash pushed on people.

        White Snake
        Pantera
        Def Lepard
        AC/DC
        Bon Jovi
        Van Halen

        Fuck sakes even Halloween!

The Music Industry cashed out true talent for washed up non playing fiddler's in the mid 90's to score out rape style deals and pushed trash on the ears of people like you that bought it...
Cobain wasn't a technically savvy guitarist, that I can't even think would be debatable. His song writing, singing, and ability to create simple but unique melodies backed by one of the best drummers of a rock band ever made Nirvana a great band. From the bands you listed only Hanen, Panteria, and Def Leppoard should be compared as being better or worse than Nirvana. They all had good players and brought something unique to thetable. AC/DC is a great hard rock band, but they're brand guitar playing is nothing special or new. It's good blues with distorted guitars. Bon Jovi, I wouldn't want to begin comparing. Image over music there, as with Whitesnake.

Nirvana was simply a rock band that should have been called a rock band in the long tradition of rock bands. With the grunge tag other 'grunge' bands took center stage over other bands that played unique styles of basic rock music. But yeah, it was marketing. Maybe sales were down or sales were up but they thought they could milk it for more by creating grunge/alternative.
Oh don't worry I agree, grunge was a bullshit marketing term.. Pearl Jam was a straight up traditional rock band. I think Nirvana considered themselves "indie punk". I don't pay attention to that stuff personally only in reference to others using the term.. just like "new rock" and "rap metal"..

Maybe Steve Vai? or John Petrucci ?

Well If you were debating me in MI I would beat you in the face and say your right as far as Phrasing.

But to say Hammet was tied to 2 Modes is just silly, maybe you should give em a listen and a fair break.

aeolian and phrygian is all there I dint say it was not but there is alot of Myxolydian.
Again give "Ride the Lightening" a listen and you will understand.

              Pink Flyd also uses Myxolydian.

Myxolydian is not as rare as you think in rock Metal. Its everywhere.

              Damn ya ever heard Tool?

Yeah, Jackson's are great for mechanical speed-weenie types. For nuance, tone, shading and subtlety, they don't come close to Pauls, Strats or Teles.

The telecaster is one of the very few guitars that can sound like a person crying. Your Jackson isn't doing that plugged into your Soldano.

Back on topic, I love Jimi and (used to love) Eddie - who probably should have died before he got old. They both redefined rock guitar. You can't say that about many others - maybe Keith, as well.

being technically proficient isn't the same as being a great musician. There is no comparison with Nirvana and Bon Jovi because Bon Jovi is for 40 year old women and who's contribution to music will be when he stops making it. White Snake were hacks.. Pantera are a bunch of sellout hair metallers that took a queer eye for the straight guy makeover from poodles to tough guys but still managed to make some decent music.. Def Lepard were a decent rock band, AC/DC are legends and continue to rock out today.
No.. the listening public got sick of the formulaic crap the hair metallers were churning out and switched to a more refreshing sound before it too became formulaic crap as the companies pushed shite like Candlebox.

To think that one lot of music was any less company driven than another is basically naive and retarded. All musical groupings have been marketed after the initial breakthrough bands. Back to the beatles and their copy cats and the beach boys, theirs and beyond.

You're confusing the fact that new artists don't get paid as much as established ones because they are untested with some overarching rational decision.. record companies only care about profits.. THEY WOULD NOT GAMBLE THEIR ENTIRE FUTURE ON UNTESTED ARTISTS OVER THEIR ESTABLISHED PROFITABLE ONES. If they could make millions trying to keep on selling whitesnake they would, but grunge effectively killed their audience because in one foul stroke they and the rest of poodle-rock suddenly were embarrassing to large sections of the general public and basically became unprofitable because the record sales waned. Record companies don't give a fuck about giving proven artists millions of dollars because it's money in the bank. You're just bitter that your preferred style of music got trumped (as they all do). To your logic bands like REM wouldn't get the 80 million dollars they did a few years ago, they would spend a million each on 80 bands to replace them.. it doesn't happen.. Style changes just kill currently popular music sales.. it happened to "grunge" too. It happened to "rap metal"..

Ionian is the major scale. It is the simplest scale in music theory because it contains no flats or sharps. In fact.. Ionian is the first thing you learn when you begin to study music theory because EVERYTHING relates back to Ionian. I was assuming that you already knew that but after reading your post there it's obvious that you don't.
I just realized I made an extremely erroneous statement there. I would have edited my other post but since it's been more than 5 minutes ...

Ionian can most certainly contain sharps and flats .. lol .. it's C Inonian (or C major - which is what AlienQ posted) that is the simplest scale because it contains no sharps and flats. I really can't believe I typed that lol.

                              And with that said .. that's another thing that doesn't really make sense. Ionian does not = C D E F G A B C D .. that's simply C Ionian.. it doesn't describe the mode (which is simply represented as 1 2 3 4 5 6 7 .. and that's how everything in music relates back to Ionian.. all other scales use the Ionian formula as a basis .. ie: aeolian = 1 2 b3 4 5 b6 7 etc.).

So I hope AlienQ isn't saying that all of Metallica's songs are in C Major lmao

But thats exactly what they did.
They threw the shit away with The grunge sound and gave it a fancy name to boot. The Music industry spit in the face of truly talented musicians.
And if you have your doubts why the fuck are there so many Rap bands that come out of the wood work today?

Ya wanna explaine why Green Day is better than Def Lepard?

                                      Good luck.

Are you sure you're not confusing Jimi with Jeff Healey? One is dead and black, the other blind and white.

Todays Guitars such as Jackson's have modifications that are unbelievable from Floyd Rose Wammies to Ice Strings and double Hummbucker's.
Ummm, the whammy isn't a "recent" innovation, the locking nut is (20 years or so?). Double humbuckers are older than me, and thats old
The potential of the 60's guitar is limited to the 60's in technical ability alone.
Tell that to (the late) Andrés Segovia. Or Lenny Breau. Comparing musical ability based on technical mastery of a specific genre is futile. You may think that the blues is simple, but I'd bet my left nut that you can't really play it. Not with that attitude.
Solid state Amps brought a whole new school of sound in itself.
Hear GK amp's in Metallica and listen to the fuzz of the old school amp's and there is no comparison.
Although solid state is fine for the road (very sturdy and reliable), the sound cannot compare to a hot valve amp.

I've been to school, and I graduated. When you have your gain at "10" and your master at "2", I agree - the guitar doesn't really matter.

But I have a hollowbody Les Paul from the Gibson custom shop that says it will not sound anything like your Jackson no matter what you do with the volume settings.

The guitar should sound good without an amp. And Roland makes cheap pieces of shit, anyway. Get a real amp. My buddy Jim Marshall would like to talk to you.

I think I'm getting yanked. I can't believe that someone told me that tonal quality is in the amp and pickups.

It's almost the exact opposite.. Record companies are so conservative they don't sign the beatles when approached.
If you had a mainstream porn site making 10k a week and then reality sites came along would you just shut off your 10k a week site to start up a reality site? No you milk them both. NO COMPANY THROWS AWAY MONEY. The market for hair metal just dried up making it unprofitable for all but a few able to make the transition such a metallica, pantera etc. The bands you mentioned continued to release material.. the albums just started bombing. Of course once you become an unviable entity you get canned.

                                                    Marshall Amps

You are exactly right a Jackson will never sound like a Gibson, no matter what you do to a Gibson its sound is burried almost as bad as an Ibanez. The "Unleashing" sound is not there, it sounds contained to me.

Roland is a very good Amp and if you will notice my choice of Amp is not solid state but a tube amp.

Again with Marshal the sound is muffled to me, the "clarity" is not there with distortion. The Roland Amp is the same model used by "The Police" in Synchronicity. The Roland Amp gives absolute clarity when its needed.

I honestly feel like I got the best of both worlds with my choice of gear and it is a unique combo I will admit that much that gives the sound the way I like it when I am on 1 channel or all 4 with the Jackson.

Nice... I think this is what I tried getting at in another thread "Best rock group". Basically all the supergroups of the 70's didn't just disappear. Most of them stayed and put out albums but they no longer produced material the public wanted to hear. The music industry tries to provide what the public will buy. The public dictates what is viable and what is not and the record company follows by dishing out tons of wannabe bands that sound like the one that sold well to begin with. Sometime marketing preceeds demand where a company artificially creates a want for a product but for music it's largely been the other way around because it's hard to coerce people to buy music they simply don't like hearing.

Also, remind me never to argue with Garce on matters of the guitar. I'm humbled just reading his posts here.

Which happens of course regardless of lyrical content there is only a certain amount of time a musical style is rebellious before it becomes something your parents listen to or whatever.

At least the 80's were filled with some sort of goal even if it was trying to get laid.

                                                              But true...
I guess the comparison is a good one and logical!
Go Green Day! Go and make the next generation a bunch of self wallowing pathetic cry babies, just like Nirvana.
I am sure everyone will relate to that message of pathetic exhistance.

If a good gutarrist means being able to express emotions and touch people in a way no words can do. Then my vote goes for:

I am a fan of both.... but Jimi paved the way for Eddie and all the rest.... NOBODY did any of those things before Jimi did!!! And Jimi's carrear was from 1967 to 1970 with only 4 original albums released. So that alone shows you the talent & impact he had on the music biz and guitarists.

Eddie is a great guitarist as well and he opened doors when Van Halen was released in the late 70's. He brought attention back to the guitar and raised the bar for all players after him. But ALOT of Eddie's playing was all tricks.... Hammering and so on..... Jimi ALSO used these tricks but they were not the foundation for his entire style.

It almost becomes an apples and oranges type of thing.... But I think Jimi did alot more in 3 or four years then Eddie has done in over 20.

I have to go with Jimi!!!

I've been playing since I was 10. I didn't take lessons from Satch, but I know music theory, can play many styles, and have done seminars with many famous guitarists (from Vinnie Moore to Chet Atkins). I studied with many great teachers............ And this has to be the most pretentious guitar discussion I've ever seen.

Here are some things I've discovered: the kind of guitar you use depends on your preference. The benchmarks you use to compare guitarists is relative, and depends on your preference.

Having said that, I'd personally agree that Kirk Hammett is a terrible guitarist.

And between Jimi and Eddie, I'd never compare. They're way too different.

                                                                                                      Comment
