IMO It is all a ploy to raise the level of gas.

Right now everyone is complaining that gas is so expensive and the oil companies are taking too much profit. I'm willing to bet that once we hit the peak it will stay that way for several months and then all of sudden drop. Once we hit the peak and have sustained it for a period of time you'll then see a farely quick drop down 10% - 15% in prices.

This way consumers that were used to paying $3.50 or whatever, will feel like they're suddenly getting a discount and will be happy about. When in reality they just went thru a sharp price climb.
