Do you use a tripod or hold your camera in hand? And if in hand, what is your shutter speed and other settings?

I'm not a photographer, but like to take pictures and if I don't use a tripod the pics usually turn out crappy due to me not having a super steady hand. Any ideas would be appreciated.
