Analysts have noted the involvement of Russia's Tu-95 strategic bombers and Tu-22M long-range bombers in the exercises -- warplanes that can carry conventional or nuclear-tipped cruise missiles and are not usually part of peacekeeping operations.
Perhaps they are training for freedomspreading operations.

Seriously though, according to Janes Defense Weekly which was quoted in that article, the China-Taiwan conflict is considered one of the most volatile situations right now. This concerns everyone, american or not. What happens if or when China choses to ignore the US nuclear umbrella over Taiwan and invade? This would be the ultimate test of US resolve. In a couple of years that is pretty much the only thing which will keep China from walking all over Taiwan.

Another scenario, what if NK decides to take advantage of the situation at the same time? This is a pretty grim scenario so keeping powerful WMD out of the hands of the communists while supporting free trade and liberal thinking is a pretty good strategy. Unless you enjoy nuclear winters.
