Help me solve a logic/brain teaser puzzle

    Help me with this problem!

Five men and their wives entered the pie eating contest. Bob, Dave, Hank, Larry, and Phil sat across from their wives, who handed them pies as fast as they could eat them. Each man ate a
different kind of pie (including peach cream and blueberry). From the information given, determine the name of each man's wife and the kind of pie he ate.

    1. Bob did not eat a cream pie

    2. Neither Hank nor Nancy's husband ate banana cream pie.

    3. The three couples at table number one were Phil and his wife; Fran and her husband; and the man who had cherry cream pie
and his wife. At table number two were Dave and his wife, who is not Bonnie; and Kathleen and her husband. who did not eat apple pie.

    4. Larry sat between Darla's husband (who did not eat a cream pie) and Hank.

The wives names are : Bonnie, Darla, Fran, Kathleen, Nancy

Husbands are: Bob, Dave, Hank, Larry, Phil

    Types of pies are :
apple, banana cream, bluebery, cherry cream and peach cream

I don't know the answer btw so I won't be able to tell you the answer. But if possible, please also try to explain how you got to the answer that you did and how you drew the diagram because I am super confused and need to figure out how to solve problems like these...

It's for a Philosophy Ethics class....

      If you tell me WHY

      2*2=4
      AND
      2+2=4

Then I'll answer your question to perfection.

I used to do these all the time for fun...

        Here's a tip..

draw yourself a grid that has all the husbands names, the wives names and the pie names on the left, and then repeat it all along the top

then you can put an X in spots and a Tick in other spots - it will look kind of like three columns along top, then two columns, then one column, so three levels to it, that way it can all be cross-referenced.

        For example,

The first part says that bob did not eat a cream pie.. therefore you can eliminate three of the pies from bob, leaving only apple and blueberry

the second part says neither hank nor nancy's husband ate banana cream pie..

so now you can eliminate banana cream pie from hank and you know also that hank is not nancy husband so you can eliminate him from her list

this is basically a process of elimination..

        again, for part three..

'phil and his wife, fran and her husband and the man who had cherry cream pie and his wife. at table number two were dave and his wife, who is not bonnie, and kathleen and her husband, who did not eat apple pie'

from this you can say the following:

phil is not married to fran
phil did not eat cherry cream pie
fran's husband did not eat cherry cream pie
fran's husband is not dave or phil
dave is not married to bonnie
kathleen is not married to dave or phil
kathleen's husband did not eat apple pie

I think if you look at it from the logical process of elimination you should be able to read between the lines and get it all together..

        hope this helps

          Table1
          Phil + Darla = apple
Larry + Fran = banana cream
Hank + Bonnie = Cherry Cream

          Table 2
Dave + Nancy = Peach cream
          Bob + Kathleen= Banana

I scored in the 98th percentile on the LSATS, they asked shit like this all the time on the logic/games part

Thanks a lot Ruth and Ace0r for all your help.

Your method of reasoning is very helpful Ruth! I am going to to go through every word you said one by one and really think about how you deduced the info you did from the statements given. It's very helpful, and I usually have a VERY hard time with puzzles like this, it's hard for my brain to comprehend. I am better at English or reading, but these "logic puzzles" seem more like Math to me.

My Philosophy teacher is making us do these puzzles and it also counts towards our grade! If I knew the class was going to have puzzles like these I would have never ever taken the class, but we can take them home and do them, we're never gonna get tested on puzzles or anything. Plus my professor is also in law school right now, so I think she likes to make us suffer with LSAT style questions...

thanks a lot! I might have more for you next week ;)

Just do what ruth said and go with the grid method, also, go to the library and check out a Kaplan book on the LSATs and skip to the logic section,, it teaches you the methods on how to draw the grids for questions like these

Since this is for philosophy and ethics. Just put down on your paper the following.
"I feel obliged to tell you that I do not comprehend logic tests so I would just recruit my friends to do them for me. I only would do this because in the grand scheme of the universe who did it, is not as important as that it was done."

If the teacher is even partially qualified, she should give at least a B to that response.

                                Table one:
Bonnie is giving Hank cherry cream pies.
Fran is giving Larry banana cream pies.
Darla is giving Phil apple pies.

                                Table two:
Nancy is giving Dave peach cream pies.
Kathleen is giving Bob Blueberry pies.

                                How it's done:

I just drew up two tables. One with 3 rows (table one) and one with two rows (table two). Then you start filling in the data you do know and you begin a simple process of elimination.

                                For example:

"Larry sat between Darla's husband (who did not eat a cream pie) and Hank."

Between means these people are obviously at the table with 3 couples, as you can't be between someone when there is only one person next to you. So from that, we know that Larry is sitting in the middle, besides Hank and Darla's Husband.

So you've got data looking like this already:

                                Table one:

                                Hank/?pie/?wife
                                Larry/?pie/?wife
                                ?husband/?pie/Darla

What i then did was listed all the types of pies in a cell for each couple and began crossing them off as i eliminated each one. It's really quite simple once you get going.
                                26 + 6 = 1

I haven't read the other responses... wanted to do it without looking so I could match my results.

                                  Phil -> Darla -> Apple
Larry -> Bonnie -> Banana Cream
Hank -> Fran -> Cherry Cream
Dave -> Nancy -> Peach Cream
                                  Bob -> Kathleen -> Blueberry

Hmmm... I've seen 2 other people with larry being married to fran, but to the best that I can see hank can also be married to fran. ie.

                                    The table at #3 is:

                                    Phil ------- Bonnie(?)

                                    ??? ------- Fran/Bonnie(?)

                                    ??? ------- Fran/Bonnie(?)

Larry sits between darla's husband and hank, the table looks like:

                                    Phil ------ Darla

                                    Larry ------ Fran/Bonnie(?)

                                    Hank ------ Fran/Bonnie(?)

There's no further differentiation based on familial relationship, eating preferences or seating that can split up fran and bonnie.

Can anyone confirm or refute this?

when you put it on a grid, you will see that when you take the "not bonnie" given (#3) into consideration that the only possible place for her to end up in would be with hank.

I did. Look at the (admittedly sucky) illustration. The 'not bonnie' thing only provides direct proof that bonnie is one of the three wives on table 1.
