I think a lot of it has to do with the thousands of years of persecution the Jewish people have been forced to endure. Like the saying goes, what doesn't kill you, makes you stronger.
When the Jews immigrated here in mass numbers as a means of survival, each generation worked to make sure the next generation was better off. They strived to assymilate and make a place for themselves and their families in their new country.
