Windows SP2 blocking ActiveX and nothing you can do about it...

Even if you click the little toolbar and tell it to install it anyway it won't let you if MS can't verify the publisher.

Is this legal, and even if it is what gives them the right to block what I choose to install?

Active X is the culprit on many hostile sites. It's MS's own code so I guess they feel they can do whatever they want.

Opera doesn't support Active X for this very reason. GMail uses Active X so I have to open Explorer for that one site still. The new version of Opera 7.6 will support more sites using a new technique.

I even tried to go adjust my security settings to the lowest possible.

"We recommend a security setting of at least medium. Please choose medium or higher and save".

I couldn't even adjust it down.

Can you give me any examples of mainstream pages that don't work (ie: that don't have to do with toolbars or dialers/aggressive sales tools)?

That's why I was asking for some examples. Sounds like legit things can still be downloaded fine, just ones that don't want to to allow themselves to be verified are blocked.

Since MS can't get off their ass to actually FIX their ActiveX problems now they're only allowing signed applets to be installed? Are the certifications only doable by them or can any of the major digital signature vendors be used?

Heh, I'm surprised they (MS) haven't started having Windows bill your credit card for every hour of computer use.

It's my choice though. I didn't pay Billy to watch over me and when I bypass his security measures it should still install just fine.

gmail doesn't use active x, they use j-av-a-sc-ript. If it was active x then firefox wouldn't work with it either.
