simple things like editing videos adding watermarks etc..-> Ulead Video Studio 9.0
Everything more advanced Adobe premiere.. effects would be after fx/maya/3dmax
there you have it
It's not the software... it's the person using it. My suggestion. Pick one and learn it in and out. They all do slice cuts and cross fades. Some programs will be easier to learn than others.
Some people say After Effects is just like premiere, and PhotoShop. I'm an AVID PHOTOSHOP user, and after effects and premiere scare the shit out of me.

i learned on premiere back in 98 and 99.....it was tighty.....made a commercial for the local (at the time) pizza joint.....was funny, my car was the star of the show
anyway....premiere was learner and user friendly for me
Adobe software is great. I think Premiere is pretty intuitive and relatively easy to learn. I have been using it since Premiere version 6.5 and now I use Adobe Premiere Pro 1.5.
Avid Xpress Pro and Final Cut are the top of the line prosummer editing packages. I use Premiere, but it can be a little ghetto at times compared to those other two.
I started with Premiere 6.5 - then went on to Premiere Pro 7.0 which I use now. I have never taken a training class or any video courses and manage to do alright. It just takes a little time to learn the 3 or 4 tools you need to do good video. If you're going to do encoding i.e. wmv's you are going to want to get a separate program - I use Cleaner XL -
These are as simple of examples as I have ready but I have made some impressive dvd's -
Problem with Vegas is that Sony now owns it. Who knows if they will make it better or just put it on the back shelf.
At least you know with Premeire Pro that Adobe will not abandon it.
Every "pro" editor I know uses FC Pro or Avid. Premerie Pro and Vegas are not taken seriously in the pro world. You basically get laughed at here in Los Angeles if you say you use Premire Pro. Adobe has improved it greatly in the last few years but they still don't take it nearly as seriously as Apple treats FC Pro.
I use Speed Razor DV, Premeire Pro, Vegas, After Effects, Ulead Studio, and Final Cut pro on a MAC
Without question the right choice for video editing is Vegas Video and its probably the least expensive of the bunch. The scaling is far superior even to Final cut and the encodes are fast and efficient.
If you are shooting Hi Def including HDV Vegas is the only good choice...you dont have to buy pricey plug ins that are slow to do hi def.
Get Vegas and the appropriate book by Douglas Spotted Eagle and you can master Vegas in half the time you would spend fumbling around with FC or Premiere.
After Effects probably shouldn't be in this list because it is compositing software not editing software and for what it does, its the best.

It's No wonder I took up drugs and alcohol, it's the only way I could dumb myself down enough to cope with the morons in this biz.
