Its the hospital's job to provide medical attention, and they charge for it. Thats no secret. You receive care, you get a bill. Circumstances do not matter, this is how it works: you receive care, you get a bill. Turn the bill over to your insurance company, or work out a payment plan with the hospital if you cannot afford to pay it all at once. They WILL work with you on a payment plan.
I guess the other alternative would have been to leave the lady laying on the floor without medical attention. A lot of people die from fainting. Not from the fainting itself, but from smacking thier head on the floor when they fall. I wonder how much you guys would be bithcing about the 'system' if they had just left her there to die or bleed or whatever.
Personaly, if it had been me, I would have been glad they gave me medical attention and billed me, rather than leave me laying on the floor because I may not be able to pay.

About the thread subject, I think it's sad that someone actually took the time to write up paperwork and such and bill the woman. Hopefully they didnt understand the situation and it was really an error, but I tend to doubt it.
Any doctor will see you. The office visit is about 65.00. Tell them you don't have insurance and most doctors in the states will give you a big discount and give you phone numbers to free healthcare.
i dont see what the big deal is, you know how many people die in the hospital all the time.
the point is she needed services thats why she was billed.
do you know how many situations alot worse than this occur each day at a hospital?
there are for profit hospitals and non profit hospitals.
non profit hospitals cannot turn you away....
also by law at a non profit hospital, they CANNOT ask for billing, insurance or any other financial information prior to triaging you. they cant even ask you IF YOU ARE ABLE to pay. If the hospital does, they can be fined $50,000 per incident.
another interesting fact.. if you are under the influence of drugs or alcohol, suicidal, or in an imparied mental state you waive your rights to choose whether or not you will be treated.

Well, I'm a Democrat and definitely not a Bush fanatic, but IF SHE ACTUALLY RECEIVED TREATMENT OR DRUGS, then of course she should she billed. Why should she not get billed just because she went through a traumatic experience? I'm pretty sure everyone who goes to the hospital is going through some "traumatic experience" or ordeal.
It's sad she went through that, but if they make an exception for her they have to make an exception for EVERYONE. So how would they pick who gets special treatment or not?
I don't think there is anything wrong with America being based on making money. If people don't like it they can move to Holland where you get free healthcare but pay half of your taxes to the government.

You are right but fainting seeing your dead son is a little different than going to the hospital for yourself. Note to myself, if I ever have to witness a death make sure I carry my insurance card.
Originally posted by MrPheer whoa... some else that actually sees shit the way it is, instead of being a crybaby liberal.
I am a liberal, I am not conservative in any of my political beliefs
at all. I just don't think it was wrong of them to charge her for services rendered.
Also it has nothing to do with "being poor" or "not being able to afford health care" like some people stated in this thread. Nowhere in that article did it say she could not afford to pay. She was outraged that she got charged. But if she was actually provided services she SHOULD be charged.

You should always carry it with you anyway, you never know when a large truck may jump the curb and run over you. Happened to me. I got treated totaly different after my wife showed up in the ER with my insurance card, then how I was being treated without proof of insurance. But thats just how it is.

For all we know she could be extremely wealthy.
I still wonder what kind of treatment she needed. If she fainted she probably needed a bed. Beds cost money. Why? Because somebody else wants that bed too. I've been to the hospital a couple times here in California and had to wait quite some time to get a bed because there were so many other people who were already using beds.
Time, equipment, work... it all costs money. Frankly, her son was just killed, if I were her, bitching about a $500 hospital bill is the LAST thing I would be doing. Sometimes money just doesn't matter, the death of a loved one is one of those times.

In your little brain, you forgot to see the picture. According what was posted. The mom saw a dead son and passed out. Don't know the details but if she was the first person to ID him, the city would pay the hospital fees.

Christ, are you that stupid? Hospitals don't fund research for medical advances, the drug companies do. So I suppose you also have no problem with hospitals charging $30 for one aspirin.
The day you sit there and see YOUR dead kid laying on a table is the day you will learn a thing or two about life and humanity.
What country has better hospitals than America? Get what you pay for I guess, unless you don't want to pay for it or can't afford it then just sue them...err they don't like to be sued so when you show up with out insurance and the bill is going to be $100,000, they start to get a little nervous because they no very few people can pay for that bill with out weighing thier options which include a lawsuit. People with out insurance are a much higher financial risk which makes hospitals nervious, don't make people nervious and they will treat you better and with more respect.

+ Large drug companies don't fund research that won't make them money. Don't expect a cure for anything, just very expensive 'treatments' that you will need to survive.

I hope you never get sick, I mean really sick, you may change your views. I had a friend that went through two years battling bone cancer. He had insurance but like most policies there was a cap, in his case it was a million dollars. After a year and a half he hit the cap and was refused any type of treatment at that point. He layed in his bed for the next 6 months and waited to die. How the fuck can you defend shit like that?

Well thats true. They fund the research for a particular drug they are trying to get on the market. Nobody is trying to find a cure for anything.

He is hiding in Colombia and never paid the settlement $ from our divorce!

FYI, if your in a hospital in the US after an accident and they want to amputate one of your limbs... charter a plane and fly to Mexico or Canada. In the US they would rather pull out the axe than risk a large malpractice lawsuit.

I have gone to emergency rooms with or without my insurance card. And, I can tell you they treat you the same.
Glad you got better treatment after showing you card. Must have been that you were admitted and the hospital was wondering were payment would come.

Show up in an ambulance at UMC in Vegas without your insurance card and see how they treat you. Then have someone produce your insurance card and watch attitudes suddenly change. I dont know where you're getting the same treatment with or without insurance, but its not the case here.
It has nothing to do with a Canada-Euro/US thing. Common sense should prevail, period. This is the equivalent of putting a 19 year old in jail for having sex with his 17 year old girlfriend.

okay dumbass. . . . . so, you figure doctors will not work at hospitals, just candystripers and interns . . . that should work
While they are at it the fire department, hospital, highway patrol, etc. who had to deal with the DUI accident should also get a lien on any incoming insurance money.
Reminds me of the guy that was falsely imprisoned in Britain, exonerated after 21 some odd years, then given a bill for ~80,000 to pay for his prison expenses.

Maybe she fell and gashed her head open and required stitches or maybe they fanned her face until she woke up and gave her a glass of water.
Most likely they stuck her in an examination room and took her blood pressure.
If your in a car accident, are unconcious, and need assistance. Should they also wait?
Actually they would likely do emergency triage care until they located a relative but wouldn't do all out surgery, etc. Maybe that's why the woman was only charged $500.

Maybe the amonia tube had a 500.00 price tag, who cares!
She passed out in the hospital, they responded using up manpower time to assist her.
That's messed up, $500 for them to put that stuff under her nose so she would wake up (not sure what it's called), help her back to her feet, and maybe a couple of pain killers (if she hit the ground hard). The system is fucked.
