    How do you archive you footage?

    Even as the storage prices drop, storing lots of videos with backups can take terabytes of space.
    Hence curious are different producers archive.
    Do you keep it all on hardrives and back up? How much space/money is this costing you? Are you compressing Raw footage and How?
    Do you only archive to mini DV tapes?

      hey jerry!

      i've been shooting content for almost 3 years now and i save all my recorded mini-dv tapes, back-up the captured video on a storage drive and also back-up the same content on dvd.

      it's a little over kill but this is my business so i don't take any chances. i bought the "G-Safe" drive and i'm really happy with it. it's a Raid 1 and that's good enough for me. i bought the 750 gb drives and the unit cost me $900.

      i also back-up my raw pictures and touch-up/watermark copies. never mess with the originals! each time you open and edit a jpeg you lose quality.

          Do you find that those Terrabyts of hard drives space get expensive? How many Terrabytes are you up to?

              We have a 4TB Buffalo TeraStation in RAID 5 (3TB usable). Of course we keep the original tapes as well, but all rendered footage is stored uncompressed on that NAS device.

                  I don't think it is, we store the DV tapes in a safe at a different location, together with 500 GB HDs with the cut material. If you store it all in one location, what if your business burns down or gets wiped out by a tornado?

                  We have additional 500 GB HDs to back the primaries up, photos, on top of that, go on DVDs. Reason being is that I had it more than once that an external HD went south on me, so storing it twice is not such a bad idea.
