I live in the middle of nowhere but a certain ex-president has a house in my neighborhood. That made them put a POP right outside the subdivision and we have DSL

That and it's a little Mom and Pop telephone company and everyone's rural so they didn't spend money getting it to the "populated" areas first.
I moved here 4 years ago from one of the supposedly wealthiest zips in the Atlanta burbs and wouldn't have gotten DSL there for another year or so - I'm happy
