Didnt like it Im affraid.... The resorts are like compounds and basicly you just end up staying in the resort because its too dangorous anywhere else.
Saying that, if you want a poolside holiday with EVERYTHING laid on then its great.......
Its not just me being a nervous tourist either.... Ive woken up on park benches in some the worst cities in the world!

I went to Puerto Plata a few years back and didn't like it at all. Like damian2001 said, it is a compound everywhere and every local there wants to try and sell you something. You can't relax on the beach for more then 10 minutes without someone coming up to you and peddling some crap.
Also, like Pim(P) mentioned, bring your domes. There are whores everywhere!Comment

Do not wear jewelry or try to show you got money, and if you can afford a bodyguard let me know. My friend Tito owns a service in downtown Santo Domingo. His crew is nuts, they are all ex pat smugglers and the locals are deathly afraid of them.

I loved my trip to the Dominican. We stayed at the Club Med and went off the compound quite often actually. We went to Santo Domingo for tours twice - it was amazing. I also visited the 'medieval italian town' can't remember what it's called but they had amazing boutiques and top-of-the-line cigar store. When I was there they were gaurding the gas stations with automatic weapons.
If you are at a good resort you with a private beach you will be fine.
Do not go on the beaches after dark even the armed secuirity wont venture out there after dusk.
Pesonally I have travelled alot and the dominican was a good deal but far more dangerouse then most places.
My God there's Porn on here!
