as the second article points out.. they were not being brutalized by crazy cops... the cops were trying to seperate them as they were all locked together with their arms and legs and refused to seperate and disband.

at the end of the day, you can avoid getting maced and beat down by a cop by simply following instructions and walking away. OR... you can try not putting yourself in the position where you know police confrontation and arrests are going to happen no matter what.
