America is barley on top as it is, and they're only on top at all because most other major nations gave up colonialism. Relatively, they're a a glass jaw empire. They have a lot of client states but every time they go for a real prize, they eventually get beaten. They couldn't hold Vietnam and they won't be able to hold Iraq. Look at Venezuela, they can't even pull off a good coup to install a military dictatorship anymore. China is going to start going after the prizes America and the Soviets couldn't hold. The US has the money to buy the bombs, but compared to other empires they're weak. Nuclear weapons are the only reason they weren't invaded by the Soviets.
Until they completely turn into a police state at home, they'll never be able to achieve the world domination those in power now are after. Even then China will still probably take them down.
The only real question is, will global warming end civilization as we know it before the American empire collapses. Based on the insane early hurricanes we're having and the tsunami in the India Ocean, I'm guessing it will.
