Well here are my views on this . I would love to see the laws passed on this. Offenders today get a frigin slap on the hand and boom they are right back out on the street doing it again. So what if it might annoy some people , So what there might be flaws with the system, so what if it might cost us all a little money out of the pocket. But god dam whats a vaule on a inocent life? If it just saves 1 persons life then its well frigin wort it..

What's next, sterilizing every male in the country to prevent rape? Taking away all our guns to prevent murder? That's the same bullshit logic that was being used in these proposed laws.Comment

I'm not for breathalizer besiudes the "rights" aspect they can be bypassed since no system is foolproof. Mandaotry and harder jail time is the answer. I know for sure if someone is locked up they aren't drinking an driving. I can't say that if they are just using a breathalizer in a car.Comment

This is a great debate, I love to hear different opinions. Driving is a "priveledge" the same as peeing in a bathroom is, you can "physically" do it anywhere but it's illegal, (so is peeing in your pants! - "you should have held it."
You have to use the road because the law says so, (It's how the gov't makes their billions!) Therefore they get to make up as many laws to "protect ourselves from ourselves" as they want.
All comes down to $$$

Yup, just disconnect it from your battery and you are good to go. It will show up in your system logs when you go in for the monitoring of the system, but that's not going to stop an alcoholic if they really want to get behind the wheel.Originally posted by GatorB

Of course the law-abiding citizens would never do this, but the hardcore drunks they were hoping would be affected by this law would certainly do it. So the innocent people get shafted again and the real problem drunks will continue to drink and drive.Comment

Dude read the study's a person drives drunk 137 times before the get caught. The numbers might of changed since then. So if there is a problem were inocent people are killed or there lives are destroyed and there is a way to save one life i dont se ewhat the beef is. I hear everyone saying that... but how is it not a right? I paid for the roads as much as you did... so why wouldn't I have the right to use them?Originally posted by Webmaster_Logic

Here are some stats for those who are opposed to this:
In 2002, an estimated 17,419 people died in alcohol?related traffic crashes?an average of one every 30 minutes. These deaths constitute 41 percent of the 42,815 total traffic fatalities. (NHTSA, 2003)
Incidence of intoxication (BAC of 0.08 g/dl or greater) for drivers in fatal crashes in 2001 was highest for motorcycle operators (31 percent) and lowest for drivers of large trucks (2 percent). The incidence of intoxication for drivers of light trucks (23 percent) was higher than that for passenger car drivers. (NHTSA, 2003)
Of the general driving age public, 97 percent see drinking and driving as a threat to their personal safety, and 66 percent feel it is extremely important to do something to reduce the problem in terms of where tax dollars should be spent. (Gallup Organization, 2003)
About three in every ten Americans will be involved in an alcohol-related crash at some time in their lives. (NHTSA, 2001)
In 2001, more than half a million people were injured in crashes where police reported that alcohol was present ? an average of one person injured approximately every 2 minutes.
So if the system can save 1 life its well worth it

Sorry, but I don't believe everyone should suffer because of a minority of bad eggs.Originally posted by Webmaster_Logic

Trust me, if you were suddenly forced to use one of these things on your car you would change your tune pretty quick. Keep in mind you also have to pay monthly monitoring fees. (around $100 a month)
If they followed your logic on everything we'd all be in padded rooms with no sharp edges. Why doesn't the government govern everyone's vehicle to a top speed of 55 MPH? That would also save a lot of lives.Comment

I agree I don't believe everyone should suffer because of a minority of bad eggs. but on the same hand there are people who go out and drive drunk everyday. So what would you do to solve the problem? Have you ever been hit by a drunk driver or lost a loved one by some idiot that drove drunk? Just remember you can become a stat the next time you leave your driveway.Originally posted by evildick

I would like to see them installed in every single car a convicted drunk driver owns. Get a new car? You get a new breathalyzer installed.
I would also like it to be an option for those who haven't received a DUI conviction with insurance companies lowering the rates of those who opt to have it in like they do airbags and alarms.Comment

Accidents will happen regarless of any speeds. A person driving drunk that gets in a crash is not a accident its called stupidty.Originally posted by evildick

The fact is that Drunk Driving will NEVER be stopped.
NEVER- It is too widespread and encouraged, yes I said encouraged. I could sit here today and write a 10,000 word essay on why but I won't. I have friends all over (U.S.) and it is no different. Every day there are people who go to the bar, restaruant, whatever, have 3-4 drinks and drive home, not thinking twice about it. It only takes 3-4 drinks to be over the "legal limit" of .08 However 90% of the fatal accidents invloving people who are under the influence are over .13 And even those numbers are curved a bit.
Unfortunatley we will only create more and more silly laws to stop a un-stoppable problem. And it seems the more we try to stop it, the more people do it. From what I have been told, drunk driving is not even half as wide spread in Europe as it is here. Reasons may vary but I believe it is because the penalties for it are harsher WHEN you are caught, NOT before. As my German friend told me last night, "we drink at the club, just not as much as you American's and we don't drive if we are drunk."
more to come later.Comment

My friend's leg was fucked up pretty bad one night as he was leaving a bar, stupid drunk lady hit him as he was walking right in the parking lot. LOL.Originally posted by Webmaster_Logic

I think the system they are currently using in some parts of Canada is pretty good. 1st conviction you get the typical fine and lose your license for a year, and the following year you have to have one of the breathalyzer devices installed in your vehicle if you want to drive. If you can't afford to do it then you can't drive for that year. After those two years are up you get your regular driving privileges back.
Second offense everything is doubled (2 years no license, 2 more years with a breathalyzer installed) and a possibility of some short jail time. (although the judges don't seem to give jail time out very often, unless someone was injured)
I can't recall what happens on a third offense, but in my opinion a lifetime driving ban would probably be justified at that point.
You'll never stop drinking and driving completely unless you somehow managed to outlaw alcohol completely, and everyone knows how well that went the last time that was tried.Comment

When the system first came out people were keeping balloons filled with their own breath in their back seat. Then when they had to blow they would just attach one of the balloons to the device.Originally posted by ajpiii
wonder how these things work... maybe I sould start selling carbon dioxide in a can. spray it into the breathalizer and the car starts up
The newer systems now require you to blow for a few seconds, then hum for a few seconds, then continue blowing, so that put an end to the guys with the balloons.

I was hit by a drunk driver this past June. New car was totalled, had to go to physically therapy for a couple months...it was a hassle. And even with that being said I think this is an utterly ridiculous solution.
I can't even say it seems good on paper - it would be a logistical nightmare to implement, and even IF they were installed on all new cars, people will just say, "Oh, I'll just take my old pickup truck tonight and then I can drive hammered". And I can just see these things malfunctioning, and people getting stranded all the time.Comment

Why not just un install it?Originally posted by mardigras
Someone will just create an electronic box that uses cartridges that simulate exhaled air and hums when you push a button
I don't think it's a terrible idea. We need to add a box that detects terrible drivers in general.Comment

About fucking time! If you're gonna drink don't drive. Its not rocket science.
do like ny does. if you are convicted, then it is required. if you have never even come close, then leave the rest of us responsible adults alone.Last edited by Cassie; 08-21-2004, 03:22 PM.ICQ: 309756847
