There's a very big difference between suicide and calling out for help.
Sometimes the lines get blurred though depending on how far someone will take it.

In the pre-interweb days, the infamous Jim Goad made an extremely large guide to suicide that he published in his Answer Me! zine. This was about '93, and with the limit to publishing mediums at the time, it caused quite a stir for awhile (along with the articles about abortion, serial killers, rape-deserving women,etc). I'm not sure what he's best known for these days, but its probably his book "The Redneck Manifesto" (which was terrible).

There was also that guy who parked his SUV on the tracks in CA to kill himself then jumped out before the train hit. Train derailed, 11 people died

my fav was the put a pencil in eahc nostril then slam your face on a desk.

About 20 years ago I published the Hebrew translation of a book by an American author, Betty Rollin. Called "Last Wish", it describes how - on behalf of her mother - she searched for the information, support, and the means necessary for suicide.

FYI there are several "Death with Dignity" groups around the country. To my knowledge, Oregon is the only state which has legislation permitting doctor-assisted suicide.

Those who really want to go the suicide way and are determined to die are nearly impossible to spot, they just do it and make sure they die. Those who make miserable attempts and fail over and over again don't really wanna die.

It's a tough call though
