    How "handy" are you?

    On a scale of 1 to 10?

I admit I am not much of a handyman. I'd rate myself a 2. I just changed some light fixtures in our laundry room and it took me about an hour and a half for two fixtures. I should have hired an electrician. At least they look good and work right.

I'm better out-doors in the yard and garden. I'd give myself a 9 for outside work.

I'd say I'm about a 6. I do very well with Carpentry and Electrical, but I'm useless with plumbing and Automotive.

I've build a shed and a deck without much problem. But on the weekend, I tried to change a washer and took an hour.

A 1. It's hard for me to assemble furniture! I can't do it. A few times I built it wrong and someone had to help me

I would rate myself at a 7 or 8. As long as I have some kind of instructions for a project that I've never done before, I can do it.

Plus, it's an excuse to buy more tools.

Those instructions are hard to follow! It's just a bunch of illustrations with 20 screws listed saying 20x 10x 5x and all the screws look the damn same. And all the boards look the same, how can you tell which is which! Yes there are pics but sometimes all the boards look the same!

9 3/4 but that is because I am missing the first joint of my left index finger.
I may of not build a cool table but does a APU for a DC-10 count?

Even just doing some reverse engineering on things works out usually, or just a pic of the final product. And then sometimes when the instructions just stop being useful, you use power tools to make it fit. Sometimes, it just takes a little jimmy rig.

9 to a 10. Not much I cant do if I put my mind to it. Ran a bodyshop, have restored 15 Studebakers. Built additions on houses, worked in construction, father owned a heating and cooling biz that I worked fulltime for, then part time for for years. Here is one of my babies. It stays up in PA at my parents its it cozy garage. Full off body restore by me, all body work by me, all paint by me. Only thing outsourced there was any chrome work, and upholstery work. Oh and had engine rebuilt too, though Ive done that in the past.

Ikea instructions has fucken stickfigures on it! There's a drawing on it of a stickfiguring calling ikea for help wtf

IKEA is actually the HARDEST furniture to assemble I think. Their instructions have no words because IKEA is cheap and wants to use the same instructions for every country, it's not even written. It's all illustrations and stickfigures.

Everyone look at this thread I made back in December asking for help assemblign a table! I even included a picture! I tried for 3 hours getting the screw in and I could not do it!! http://www.gofuckyourself.com/showthread.php?t=790635

The next day I had a guy over I hired to move some boxes for me. I asked him to do it for me and he got it in within 3 minutes! I guess I just didn't position the screw in right! The angle was off.

Hey, I was going to ask you about that. For the sink you put in the bar top, did you plumb that into your house, or does it just drain into a bucket or something?

A bar is going to be one of the first projects in my new house, so I'm just trying to do some recon.

If you are doing a new build (house) by all means add it to the plumbing. Unfortunatly for this one a drain would have meant major construction. I would have had to plumb it down to the first floor kitchen drain and then behind the cabinents. For this one it ended up being the dreaded bucket They are not terrible, you just have to keep an eye on them.

If you are building in a already constructed house, I have ran them through the floor and into the basement sump pump.

My basement was a typical 1500 sq ft box, just the concrete walls, no electrics, no ceiling or floor.

Now its a fully completed content studio with changing room and gear storage, 4 studio sets, built in 9 ft backdrop hangers, recessed lighting, sound system. Took 3 months, no other help.

I didnt skip the planning permission or inspections, so its gotta be alright lol

I think I'm going to just skip the sink on this one. I want to make an "L" shaped bar, but it seems like it would be a pain in the ass. I want to stain it dark so I don't have to use really expensive wood, but so it still looks nice. I just don't want to stain it while it's on top of the carpet, so I might rethink my plan.

I might hit you up again for some advice once I get into it, if you don't mind.

An air nailer works best for tacking the panels onto the frame but screws are fine also.
Ya, I had planned to stain outside and bring it in, but the bar is going upstairs and it would be hard to bring it up in one piece if it's in an "L" shape. Then I thought to stain outside and assemble the two pieces upstairs, but I don't want any gaps in the seam where the two pieces meet. Normally I would run a bead of caulk down the seam and then stain the wood, so it all looks like one piece, but them I'm back to staining up on the carpet. Might just have to change my design, or just get some kind of decrative cap I can use to cover the seam up. Not sure yet.

Finished by 23, while doing adult on the side after work for 5 years. Full time with adult now, but at least worst case scenario if my adult stuff dies tomorrow, I still have something to fall back on that makes 6 figures a year. I know a couple plumbers who own their own service trucks and companies, that easily pull 800-1000 dollars a day
