I drilled a 3/4" hole into my hand and chipped bone. These photos were 1 day after (unsucessful) micro surgery to repair the nerves. To this day I still hve no feeling in those two fingers. They said keep the bandages on for 2 weeks. The bandage came off the next day, so I could work.

Several years ago I was squatting down painting trim when I lost my balance and fell backwards. In my attempt to "catch" myself I drove my wrist into a nail in another piece of trim that had been removed and I hadn't noticed it. It entered right where the wrist and hand join and scraped along the bone all the way in. Getting it out hurt more than landing on it. I didn't type for a few days

Be sure your tetnus shot is up-to-date after you have a puncture wound.
