keep in mind he didn't just read it , he was passing it out at his school to the teachers and students.
if you tried doing the same thing with nazi literature you would prob be in trouble too.
Now mind you the punishment is alot different. but if you went to thailand with a gram of heroin its alot dif punishment than in the usa.
i think the most important factor is whether he KNEW that would be his punishment before handing out the literature.

The whole thing is messed up!
But consider this, the Koran is the basis for their means of government and attacking the Koran means attacking the government. The west is interested and gaining allies in the middle east to take down governments and those that attack the Koran are great recruits. If he spread his view to many people with great success there would be many people available to take down the government which will lead to more killing(at least in the short term).
His approach to solving the issue of womens right should not have involved the Koran or statements claiming others misinterpeted the Koran.
Everybody in the region is well aware that their is the death penalty for blasphemy.
I don't agree with this, but when in the middle of a hell fire don't be stupid enough to ask for some gasoline.
