Effective for what purpose? If you mean for getting them to click it for example, in a lot of cases text can work better.

As lazy as people are, they are also so desensitized to banners (for example) that they don't even see them on the page....so in those cases text could be more effective.

text with plenty of keywords in it is best as when picked up by the search engines you will probably get some on going traffic.

For the absolute best results, combine good text with a good image. Images by themselves don't draw as well as text by itself, IMHO. I have found this to be the case time and time again.

That's the big advantage of good text. But I wouldn't recommend keyword spamming. Writing for a SE is different than writing for a surfer but there are ways to get the best of both worlds. Too few webmasters take the time to do good writing on their sites.

I think text is because many surfers have developed the sense that an image will lead them into nothing but a popup hell, and seem to have more trust on the text.

pictures are worth a thousand words but they cant compete with text.....with text you can manipulate and persuade with much more power.... bind the surfers thoughts with subliminal suggestions... and rape his mind to BUY NOW.

SIG TOO SMALL! Maximum 1200x600 button and no more than 30 text lines of ALL SIZES and COLORS. Unless your sig is for a GFY top banner sponsor, then you may use a 6240x4800 instead of a 1024x800.

That's basically it. Test makes the surfer use his imagination, which BEGINS the fantasy process. Pics only work if the surfer is turned on by them. Moreover, you don't know how many times a surfer has already seen the pics you are showing him. Add to that the fact that text uses LESS BW than graphics files and it's a no brainer.
