    Getting pagerank from no pagerank?!?

I was doing some research on some sites' interlinking structures, and noticed that there was a particular site with a few pages marked with PR5, however the backlinks (about 25 of them to each PR5) showed no PR at all.

    Can someone explain this?

After some Googling, I noticed a topic along the lines of "Google's Ghost Pagerank": http://www.webpronews.com/insiderrep...tPageRank.html

    Could this be a factor?

The article explains that this so-called "Ghost pagerank" is a summation by Google that is maintained for approx. 2-3 weeks-- Then the pagerank is returned to its actual state.

However, the PR5 pages that I looked at previously were created back in early May...

        Quite puzzling, indeed.

One sentence on that page pretty much summed it up:

"by now I don't see hardly any correlation between ranking and PageRank, and frequently the toolbar PageRank makes no sense at all. "
          .

"A thread at the HighRanking forum discusses a Tripod site's rapid rise to a PageRank of 5."

The root domain is a factor to consider.

tripod, geocities etc this is not the first time i have seen this.

I know, I checked Altavista, which has the most backlinks (25... As opposed to Google's result of 6 backlinks).

I'm guessing the significant portion of the PR is passed from the root domain, even though it isn't internally linked. How odd.

If the sites were showing up in the backlinks, then typically they have a PR4+, however, if you say they had no PR.. then its still possible google added them, and if they did, then its counting the backlinks, and therefore the site with those backlinks can have a high PR, even though the other sites dont have any PR.

I make it policy to have every page on the site link back to the main page. I think it helps

the thing is google does not display the "new" backlinks at the same time as the "new" pagerank. those sites with a white toolbar already have pagerank and will show up in the backlinks.
