network problem, totally stumped! help!

can't be the router if it's just that computer; my guess is maybe a faulty network card?

if replacing your cable modem doesn't do the trick, try changing out your nic card. i have had several go on me over the years for seemingly no reason.

bad ethernet card is the last hing you haven't tried, also try the new nic in a new pci slot if you have one, or try a new driver just in case on it

does it lose connection completely or just certain applications? could be a windows firewall issue

- Change settings to static ip instead of router dhcp

No other computers on the network have this issue.

from the command prompt, ping -t google.com
if you see packet loss after you run it for a while, its a cable modem or upstream from that issue.

i alreayd changed ethernet card, i said that in first post

i tried setting it to ping -t my router, and yeah its dropping packets to the router,
soits not the cablemodem
its on the computer

Quite possibly its your DHCP. stop using DHCP and assign an IP manually and see if it still does it.

Sounds like a speed/duplex issue with the nic and your router. What kind of network card and what kind of router? Check the settings on the nic and see if it is set to auto, 10/full, 10/ half, 100/ full, 100/ half. If it is set to auto change it to 100/ full and see if that works. I have seen this issue too many times to count and it usually is a speed/duplex issue

Check your firewall settings if its only certain apps. Your hardware I think is fine.

winsock nto corrupt because reinstall of OS would have fixed that
its not the cable because i tried other cables
and its still fucking doing it

its not duplex either
and changing it off dhcp didn't help

I had the same problem and for me it was the modem. New modem = no more problems for me.

If you find yourself rebooting the modem a lot, then most likely it is the modem. if you find that it drops you and it is fixed by a reboot of the modem then I would guess that would be it. You can also bring up a command promt and try a tracert (space) www.google.com and see if , and where it drops off. If you get nothing when pinging a www addy, try a ip ping e.g. 64.169.140.6, and see if that works. If so its a DNS prob. It could be just a network prob from your provider as well. I work with a DSL provider on these types of probs, and there are many possible things to go wrong. Sounds like you covered most of your end. May as well swap out the modem and go from there. Also I have switched out a few NIC's and have had 2 in a row be bad, so that is also possible.
